It looks like X does not mark the spot, or at least not a place in which we want to be in. We will be moving all activity to (hopefully) blue-er skies, or potentially to a large mammal with a trunk. You can find us there, always as VALUEfnd!

@GameResearch_E I was today years old when I realized the "dragon slayer" play on words in that title.

Communicating the impact of Dragon's Lair with as few words as possible is a real challenge as I edit! It's easy to get very overblown. The broader impact is best saved for a book on multimedia games, but the story is too important to not do justice when I have the opportunity.

Thanks for adding it! For anyone interested, the ebook is decently priced; for the print version, there's a 50% discount code (AYCO8676) for individual orders through the publisher that expires at the end of April.

Big thanks to the anonymous tip for @herrprofdr's "Amnesia Remembered"! 🙏 Would have easily looked this one over, but turns out, it's explained through the lens of @EA's 1986 text adventure #Amnesia. Added to the site!! 📚 👉thevideogamelibrary.org/book/amnesia-r… #Archaeogaming

Doing some REAL #digitalArchaeology today! Trying to get archaeological data from a 1994 floppy.. Have successfully extracted the contents of the floppy disk, but no luck running the install or opening the database...

Okay, this site has gotten too gross. I'll keep this account as a placeholder but anything new will be on my Mastodon account. Its address is pinned from one of my older tweets (this seems to be working... for now), or you can find it atop my web page at cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~aycock/

@GameResearch_E Well, yes and no, in the sense that the company wasn't in the game business :-)

@herrprofdr Kates was supported by a company so I wouldn't peg him in the amateur field. I'm interested to see anything else come out about him though!

In 1959, this 15 foot tall computer could play checkers. The EMAG-3, creation of David Ecklein, was a dedicated game-playing computer built by a person, not a company or institution. One of the earliest electronic games ever, it shows what people could do just as a challenge.

@GameResearch_E Where "recent" must be relative, given he passed away in 2018! (In my defense, I was prepping to start a talk at the time and may have misheard.)

100% @herrprofdr - he helped me find my voice and niche in archaeology as a researcher. I'm proud of what we've accomplished thus far and soooo much more is to come (like we have so many projects on the go we've started a spreadsheet for tracking lol). Thanks my friend!

Okay let's get sentimental: Who is someone you met #onhere who helped you in some way? Mine is @billbarnwell. If I didn't meet him 10+ years ago, there's no way I'd be doing what I do now for a living. Truly cherish his friendship and advice.

@MartinStoermer @kbiittner @ISSarchaeology I saw earlier that bookmarks weren't being captured...? I haven't dug through my archive to check, nor had time to go through my bookmarks myself to save whatever I thought was interesting at the time. Sigh.

I'm sad but also legit excited to see what my colleagues will have to say about the fall of Twitter. I'm already thinking about what future digital archaeologists will interpret about this site/platform and what it meant. What will be the archaeological record of Twitter...

@MartinStoermer @ISSarchaeology My collaborator and friend (thanks Twitter!!!) @herrprofdr might have an idea about that. As with the archaeological record more broadly and based on my experience looking at digital artefacts, I imagine only fragments.
