@AmericanGwyn I personally think Tolkien was searching for forgiveness for what the “good guys” did in WW1. Pity for Sméagol. Gandalf offering to pardon Saruman. Boromir’s final heroism. He tries to show there is clearly good vs evil, but struggles. In the end there’s no return to innocence.
