Shopify handles scale that would break most systems.
On a single day (Black Friday 2024), the platform processed 173 billion requests, peaked at 284 million requests per minute, and pushed 12 terabytes of traffic every minute through its edge.
These numbers aren’t anomalies. They’re sustained targets that Shopify strives to meet. Behind this scale is a stack that looks deceptively simple from the outside: Ruby on Rails, React, MySQL, and Kafka.
But that simplicity hides sharp architectural decisions, years of refactoring, and thousands of deliberate trade-offs.
In this newsletter, we map the tech stack powering Shopify from:
- the modular monolith that still runs the business,
- to the pods that isolate failure domains,
- to the deployment pipelines that ship hundreds of changes a day.
- It covers the tools, programming languages, and patterns Shopify uses to stay fast, resilient, and developer-friendly at incredible scale.
A huge thank you to Shopify’s world-class engineering team (@ShopifyEng ) for sharing their insights and for collaborating with us on this deep technical exploration.

If you are a smart ambitious engineer or entrepreneur with a *long term horizon*, rural India is a great place to build your dream. Unlike rural areas in developed countries, rural India still has youthful demographics - in fact better demographics than major cities in India, which rely on migration from rural areas for their talent.
Why not go to the source of the talent? In the average rural district in India (Tenkasi being typical) you have about 20,000 kids born a year. Think deeply about this number! What can you build with that talent? There are over 600 such rural districts in India!
The "long term horizon" part is extremely important. If you want an exit in 3 years, forget it! And look beyond English and engage the talent in their native language.

Some of the pic shared by people who have done Bhairava naam japa on last astami tithi. More than 81 Lakh count of japa was performed. Additionally we could do Bhairava seva at the Kalabhairava, Batuka Bhairava temples as well as Mahakala in Ujjain, plus anndanam in various vedapathshalas.
In the last 3 years Bhagwan Bhairava's infinite Shakti has pulled countless people into a simple yet powerful practice of nityopasana, developed adhara-shakti, made steady in sadhana path, than any institude or org or human, howsoever exceptional, could have done.. only an endless devata knows how to carry a civilization from deep stupor into a greater forceful awakening..

Last week, we opened a nice campus in Tharuvai in Tirunelveli district, about 1 hour from where I live in Tenkasi. I love this new campus!
With this we have 3 major centres in southern districts: Mathalamparai in Tenkasi, Kappalur in Madurai and Tharuvai in Nellai. We are also expanding in the Kumbakonam area and we have a significant presence in Palladam near Coimbatore. We have many smaller satellite offices too and I work out of a small satellite in a remote village.
We are taking aggressive steps to direct our growth in Tamil Nadu towards rural offices so we don't further overcrowd Chennai.

This peepul sapling (arasa maram in Tamil, Bodhi in Sanskrit), on this sheer wall of stone in a local temple, has found a literal micro-niche to thrive.
That reminded me of bootstrapping a business - you find a micro-niche to survive and take root and then figure out how to branch off from there!

@ANI I support lateral entry, the current ias lobby is so strong they run the system as they like with nocheck।
Ias lobby is a closed group and it should be open।
English

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tweets, "INC hypocrisy is evident on lateral entry matter. It was the UPA government which developed the concept of lateral entry. The second Admin Reforms Commission (ARC) was established in 2005 under the UPA government. Veerappa Moily chaired it. UPA period ARC recommended the recruitment of experts to fill the gaps in roles that require specialised knowledge. The NDA government has created a transparent method to implement this recommendation. Recruitment will be done through UPSC transparently and fairly. This reform will improve governance."

English

@AshokKhemka_IAS IAS,IPS were opposed at the time of independence and considered a closed Elite group working for their own interests। We should abolish direct entry in this Elite class, So they stop acting like god।

Running a public company is a lot lot harder than running a private company; it is like being on the treadmill all the time.
As a private company, we invest in long term R&D and infrastructure without worrying about how quarterly numbers would look.
Personally, as a public company CEO, I won't be able to live in a remote village and work on my own deep tech projects along with the school, the farm and rural works - the pressure to manage the stock price would be brutal and then I would have to transmit that pressure to everyone else in the company.
That relentless pressure leads to employee burnout and attrition.
We remain private because I want to work with our people long term on critical projects.
