The worst torture methods in human history: A thread 🧵 1. Flaying is a method of slow and painful torture and/or execution in which skin is removed from the body. Generally, an attempt is made to keep the removed portion of skin intact.

In 2008, Finnish police found a dead mosquito while searching the inside of a stolen car. They tested the blood from the mosquito's last meal and successfully used it to identify the thief that stole the car.

In 1970, a group of hikers were trekking through the Isdalen Valley mountains in Norway when they came upon the body of a partially burned woman. An autopsy revealed she had consumed over 50 sleeping pills. Her fingerprints were sanded off, and she had also suffered a blow to her neck. Law enforcement meticulously examined the scene but found no clues to identify the woman. Strangely, it appeared deliberate, as all marks and labels had been painstakingly removed from her clothing and belongings. The case remains unsolved and is one of the most profound Cold War mysteries in Norwegian history. Despite her severe injuries, the police estimated her height to be 5 feet 4.5 inches and believed her age to be between 25 and 40. The autopsy ultimately revealed that the Isdal Woman had burned alive. Her cause of death resulted from this agonizing experience, compounded by the ingestion of a substantial quantity of sleeping pills. As the investigation unfolded, the mystery deepened. Two suitcases in Bergen Train Station's lost luggage department were believed to be linked to the woman, as her fingerprint was discovered on a pair of glasses found inside. However, the contents of the suitcases, including clothes, wigs, cosmetics, and other items, which could have provided vital clues, had once again been meticulously stripped of all labels. Interestingly, a coded note was discovered in one of the suitcases. Once deciphered, it revealed a list of places where the woman had stayed. As police delved deeper into the evidence, the possibility emerged that the Ice Valley Woman might have been entangled in espionage activities. They uncovered her stays in various Norwegian hotels, where she employed different aliases and forged passports, frequently changing rooms. She spoke English with an accent and occasionally used German phrases. People often recalled encountering her, describing her as bearing an aura of wealth and sophistication. One witness recalled observing a woman walking in the valley, followed by two men. Strangely, none of them were appropriately dressed for the harsh conditions.

9 biggest scandals in history: 1. Watergate: Tapes revealed that President Nixon and his top advisors were involved in covering up a break-in at a Democratic National Committee office in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. Nixon resigned before he could be impeached, becoming the first President to step down. Several of his top advisors — including the White House lawyer, Chief of Staff and Attorney General — did prison time. The Committee to Re-elect the President was using mechanisms of government to attack domestic opponents in the press and the political world, even breaking into the psychiatrist’s office of the Pentagon Papers leaker, Daniel Ellsberg, to see what kind of dirt they could use to smear him.

8 of history's biggest unsolved mysteries: 1. D. B. Cooper: On the afternoon of November 24, 1971, a nondescript man calling himself Dan Cooper approached the counter of Northwest Orient Airlines in Portland, Oregon. He used cash to buy a one-way ticket on Flight #305, bound for Seattle, Washington. Thus began one of the great unsolved mysteries in FBI history. Cooper was a quiet man who appeared to be in his mid-40s, wearing a business suit with a black tie and white shirt. He ordered a drink - bourbon and soda - while the flight was waiting to take off. A short time after 3:00 p.m., he handed the stewardess a note indicating that he had a bomb in his briefcase and wanted her to sit with him. The stunned stewardess did as she was told. Opening a cheap attaché case, Cooper showed her a glimpse of a mass of wires and red-colored sticks and demanded that she write down what he told her. Soon, she was walking a new note to the captain of the plane that demanded four parachutes and $200,000 in twenty-dollar bills. When the flight landed in Seattle, the hijacker exchanged the flight's 36 passengers for the money and parachutes. Cooper kept several crew members, and the plane took off again, ordered to set a course for Mexico City. Somewhere between Seattle and Reno, a little after 8:00 p.m., the hijacker did the incredible: He jumped out of the back of the plane with a parachute and the ransom money. The pilots landed safely, but Cooper had disappeared into the night, and his ultimate fate remains a mystery to this day. The FBI learned of the crime in-flight and immediately opened an extensive investigation that lasted many years. Calling it NORJAK, for Northwest Hijacking, we interviewed hundreds of people, tracked leads across the nation, and scoured the aircraft for evidence. By the five-year anniversary of the hijacking, we had considered more than 800 suspects and eliminated all but two dozen from consideration.
