Excited to share that our work has been published in @Cancer_Cell @melodyzeng @WeillCornell In this study, we uncover how chronic psychological stress promotes tumor progression through a microbiota–phage–fibroblast signaling axis. We show that stress-induced activation of bacterial prophages drives TLR9 signaling in cancer-associated fibroblasts, leading to local glucocorticoid production that suppresses anti-tumor B cell immunity. These findings reveal an unexpected mechanism linking the gut microbiota, bacteriophages, the tumor microenvironment, and adaptive immunity, while highlighting new therapeutic opportunities for cancer immunotherapy. This project has been an amazing journey, and I'm sincerely grateful to my PI, Dr. Melody Zeng, my co-authors, collaborators, and everyone in the Zeng Lab for their invaluable support, and collaboration throughout this work. I'm thankful to the @CancerResearch for supporting my postdoctoral training as a CRI Irvington Fellow. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

@hilalbashir65 @globalimmuno Yes. We have examined the questions you asked in elderly mice (over 90 weeks) and elderly humans (over 70 years). There will likely be exceptions, but all signs suggest that hDCs can be elicited in mice and humans of diverse ages.

Take a GOOD look at this study. It is not only brilliant and practice changing, but also life changing. Older people develop dementia. "Dementia is the general name for a decline in cognitive abilities that impacts a person's ability to perform everyday activities. This typically involves problems with memory, thinking, and behavior, a disruption in thought patterns, emotional problems, difficulties with language, and decreased motivation." Hepatic encephalopathy is a brain dysfunction specifically seen in cirrhosis patients. Hepatic encephalopathy occurs when the damaged liver no longer cleans up toxins like it should. Toxins like ammonia then build up in the bloodstream and can affect brain function resulting in confusion, disorientation, and erratic behavior - and a LOT of symptoms and signs of hepatic encephalopathy overlap with dementia. Unlike classical forms of dementia such as Alzheimers Disease, hepatic encephalopathy related brain dysfunction which can mimic dementia forms, is treatable and reversible - which means, we can bring people who were considered never to return, back to us. In this intense study published in JAMA Open Network, clinical researchers at the Veterans Affairs medical centers across USA, studied medical records of more than 175,000 U.S. Veterans over a 10-year period. All of them had dementia. None of them were diagnosed from a cirrhosis point of view. And they were continued on best supportive care and comfort care for dementia. But the clinical researchers found something. Close to 10% of these patients had undiagnosed cirrhosis and possible hepatic encephalopathy. Let that sink in: 10% of 175,000 patients with dementia for which they were doomed to end of life care, had in fact a treatable and reversible cause for the brain dysfunction. The lesson here is simple. If you encounter an older patient and they show symptoms and signs of dementia, do not stop at dementia. But screen them also for liver disease and hepatic encephalopathy. This could be life changing for them, because we can bring them back from the dark, back into the light where we can see them better and they can see us too. There is hope.
