As soon as I hear labels like "Jatt Sikh," "Khatri Sikh," "Tarkhan Sikh," etc., I immediately know Bharamvaad (superstition, falsehood) is at play. Sikhi is not caste-based. According to Guru Granth Sahib Ji, you are either a Sikh or you are not. There is no such thing as a "Jatt Sikh" or "Khatri Sikh" in the spiritual path laid out by the Gurus. These labels aren't just "occupations." They are remnants of the Brahmanical caste system, a Hindu societal hierarchy which Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the Sikh Gurus rejected entirely. Many try to justify labels like Jatt or Tarkhan by saying they refer to “jobs” or “communities.” But let’s be real, read a little history Historical Evidence: A Jatt was a landowning peasant caste, part of Sikh Armed forces A Khatri was a mercantile, part of sikh armed forces A Tarkhan was a carpenter caste. Ramgarhia, Ravidassia, Mazhabi, Lubana all had specific roles in the varna system. If these were just occupations, then no one would object to a so-called “lower caste” Granthi, raagi, or jathedar. SGGS Ji's Bani Is Clear "Jaat ka garab na kario koi, brahman chhatri sud vais hoi" – Bhagat Kabir Ji, SGGS 1123 "Manas ki jaat sabhai eikai pehchanbo" (Recognize all of humankind as one) – Guru Gobind Singh Ji (Akal Ustat) "Neech andar neech jaat, neechi hoo at neech..." (Lowliest among the lowly castes... I am with them, not with the proud high-castes) – Guru Nanak Dev Ji, SGGS 15 How much more direct can Gurbani be? Guru Nanak Dev Ji directly rejected Brahmin supremacy and untouchability. Guru Amar Das Ji instituted Pangat before Sangat, you had to sit as equals to eat, destroying caste hierarchy. Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa, erasing all caste titles, giving everyone the same surnames, Singh and Kaur a direct attack on caste identity. The Panj Pyare came from different castes ,Jatt, Khatri, Chhimba, Nai, and Water-carrier (so-called lower caste) to declare caste irrelevant in Khalsa Panth. Yet today, many call themselves “Jatt Sikh” or “Khatri Sikh,” conveniently ignoring this legacy. That is not Sikhi. That is Indianization a colonial relic that has crept into our minds. Some say: "Well, in India people call themselves Bihari or Punjabi, isn’t that the same as Jatt or Khatri?" That is an illogical comparison: Bihari/Punjabi = regional identity. Jatt/Khatri/Tarkhan = caste hierarchy rooted in varna, used to divide society by birth and purity. Guru Sahib fought caste. They never said “don’t call yourself Punjabi.” But they did say don’t identify with jaat (caste). The Indian State promoted caste-based federations and Gurdwaras (like Jatt-dominated committees or Ravidassia Mandirs), driving a wedge in Sikh Panth. Post-1947, Indian politics encouraged caste-based voting blocs and dalit vs non-dalit Sikh divisions, further weakening Ik Onkaar da paigam (oneness message). This is divide and rule, not Gurmat. A Sikh is one who walks the path of Naam, Seva, Simran, and Sangat. Not someone who takes pride in Jatt bloodlines or Khatri roots. Caste pride is ego. Ego is poison. Gurbani says: "Haumai deeragh rog hai, daaroo bhi is maahi." (Ego is a deep disease, but it also holds the cure within) – Guru Nanak Dev Ji If you proudly call yourself a “Jatt Sikh,” “Khatri Sikh,” or “Ramgarhia Sikh,” you’ve missed the point. You are not following Sikhi, but Bharamvaad and Hindustani culture masked in a Sikh identity. You are either a Sikh who believes in equality and One Divine Light in all or you are something else.
