@bendreyfuss A lot of this was due to rights issues from the original licensing agreements, e.g. music licensing. When I was at 20th Century Fox Television, we had to make the business case to re-license music from the original broadcast run to all media (couldn't make it for Boston Public)..

There are lots of hit shows from the aughts that lasted multiple seasons but never were made available to streamers or had DVD releases, like Boston Public.

The thing is this is false. Like, there was a brief period in the aughts when ~many~ television shows got DVD releases but by no means did all of them! If you really liked my dad’s CBS show “The Education Of Max Bickford,” when it was cancelled, you were shit out of luck.

One odd aspect of streamers taking down shows that never got a physical media release is that it almost feels like we’re returning to an era before home video; an era I wasn’t around to see. Missed something on broadcast TV in the 1960s? Tough luck. It’s gone.
