Truth tellers are the Achilles heel of collective denial because they call attention to what’s being ignored.

Here's an explainer thread about what I think would happen in special education if the US Department of Education went away. I have no insider knowledge about plans, but this thread is how I would do it. 🧵

@Molson_Hart Agree. And they allocated far too much personal capital toward consumption instead of investing in their own families.

I know a huge number of people in their 60s and 70s with one grandchild at most. Many with zero. These people had 3-4 kids of their own, and they assumed their kids would do the same. They planned for 10-15 grandkids at this age. Not for me to judge, but it’s sad to see.

A study shows MRI brain scans of teenagers aged faster during the COVID19 pandemic. As we get older the outer layer of the brain gets thinner but during the pandemic due to social isolation, anxiety & depression, this process was accelerated in teenagers! @HenaDoba @NewsNation

We won't mince words. The reelection of Donald Trump is a disaster for the Boundary Waters. This is not hyperbole. This is not a case of Trump-Derangement Syndrome. This is based on Trump’s campaign promises and attacks he has already made on the Boundary Waters.🧵 📸 Alli Faricy

Not sure, but doctors are fiercely tribal. It would take a neurodiverse doctor or an immensely brave & stalwart one to go against the prevailing beliefs of the Tribe. We have a few really brave, stalwart ones in this community. But there aren’t many. The viciousness of medschool weeds them out. Only the ferociously loyal survive. And that’s like going through a war. How many soldiers in war will stand up against fellow soldiers committing atrocities? I think it’s a bit like that. But that’s just my theory.

I cannot believe primary care and A&E doctors don't suspect something is going on with Covid19. I would like to know why they aren't saying anything. What actually goes on in their heads? Is it as simple as: "Nobody is talking about Covid so I'm not going to either?".

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

For those who wondered how American society allowed the sins of our past, realize that tonight Trump won the majority in spite of his lack of character and integrity. He demonstrated his racism, misogyny, xenophobia and tried to overthrow the government with an insurrection with any accountability or consequence. He is celebrated for his strategy of packing the court that will ultimately give him immunity and throw out his convictions. His indictments will disappear. This says everything about our society. We absolved this behavior by electing him. A celebration of criminality.

I’ve reported on infectious diseases for 15 years, but during the covid-19 pandemic and even more during the global outbreak of mpox clade IIb, I was shocked by the amount of misinformation I was seeing. Misinfo had always been part of any outbreak, but this felt different.

Gee I wonder why TB is back. What could have possibly damaged our immune systems in the last 4 years????
World Health Organization (WHO)@WHO

🆕 #Tuberculosis, also known as TB, resurged as the leading infectious disease killer in 2023. Approximately 8.2 million people were newly diagnosed with #TB in 2023 – the highest number recorded since WHO began global TB monitoring in 1995 bit.ly/3A8WsXw

@po_move @Dan_Wyke Especially female MDs. So many take pride in how tough they are to “win” at the game. They don’t see the flaws and their ego supports their sacrifices so the system must be upheld.

@Dan_Wyke Misogyny is internalised by women. It's a great big myth that women are better, safer doctors for other women. Medicine is a patriachical hierarchical system. Few see their way outside of it. It's not a diss. You have to learn to play the game to get on. It's the system.

My daughter recently became old enough to see a GP by herself. Her mum and I have spoken about the risk of gaslighting from male docs and advised her to see female docs whenever possible (obv some women gaslight). Is this really acceptable in a modern health system? #EndMisogyny

@Dan_Wyke Please teach her how to advocate for herself either way. I had awful gaslighting from a lovely female ob/gyn re: endometriosis. I was stunned how quickly she turned cruel and dismissive once I had pain. It was confusing and emotionally violating.

Something I hear so often from people with Long Covid is that moment when they finally see a doctor, but it's not a great one, and they have to decide whether to fight every single thing the stupid doctor says, or just nod and try to get some scraps of inadequate help.

@AshleyGWinter I agree and I’m grateful to have had a positive experience with numerous pyogenic granulomas. It likely helped that they were located all over but initially was dismissed as an STD though the presentation and locations were crystal clear with pregnancy.

One of the most neglected areas of medicine is vulvar dermatology and it breaks my heart because people have so many options for all their other dermis. When I see a woman with Lichen Sclerosis she has usually been suffering for years & gotten minimal guidance.

@AmyClukey As a former professor of graduate psych students, I can assure you that the social maturity required to accept critical feedback is a work in progress for most people until probably their 40s.
