Horrifying news from San Diego yesterday, where worshippers were attacked just days before Eid al-Adha. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire Muslim community in San Diego. I know British Muslims are feeling deep anxiety today, with this news coming just days after a march spread hatred on the streets of London. We have record levels of funding for protecting mosques in this country, but we must do more than build higher walls. It is incumbent on everyone, across society, to stand together in solidarity against hatred. I know the British people will do so today.

I condemn the deadly attack on a mosque in San Diego. My thoughts are with those affected. I know many Muslims in the UK will be shaken by this, worried about their safety when going about their lives and attending mosque, and what it says about the times we’re living in. I understand those fears. Violence like this does not happen in a vacuum. It grows in an environment where division and anti-Muslim hostility are normalised. That is intolerable. We must all come together against it.

In London, and other places. - social housing has an important function in our society. - there are some people living in social housing who are not working who could / should be - and there is a conversation about how to support them that needs to be had - there are some (41 per cent on average) people living in social housing who are working and their communities are richer for them living there as a result of affordable housing - there are some people who cannot work, they are still important to their communities and may add value in other ways - that said, the designation “economically inactive” may cover people who are performing vital labour such a care work - we need to build more housing, research from multiple independent organisations suggests that a lot of it needs to be social housing and we may now need creative tenures to get people who cannot afford to buy at current prices but earn well into new homes (like shared ownership but less riddles with problems) - retired people - whether they are homeowners or social tenants - add value to their communities even after the stop working. This includes but is not limited to helping with childcare which means young parents can keep working. - but it is also true that some older people are living in homes that are too large for their needs and a younger family could benefit from the home being freed up This list could go on and on. Housing policy involves contradictions and difficult conversations. But, communities are richer if they are mixed and varied with people from across different ages, incomes and backgrounds. But it's 100% legal and acceptable to mock any religion, including Islam, and it's absolutely right to mock a disgusting item of clothing that dehumanises and degrades women - and is a cultural/political garment worn by fewer than 1/10 of Muslim women globally and mostly in countries where it's legally imposed by men. These things are all different, aren't they?

Then he stole her bag and phone and even took a call from his victim's boyfriend to whom he bragged about what he had done. But after pleading guilty to charges of rape and robbery the teenager was sentenced to just three years because of his age - and because he said ‘sorry’.
