China is at its peak as a civilization right now. Chinamaxxers gush about its world-beating infrastructure, technology, food, etc. And yet so many Chinese people want to get their money out of the country. Is there any precedent for this, in modern history??

China will officially begin taxing offshore trusts established by its citizens, closing a longstanding loophole used by wealthy families for asset protection and succession planning bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

@W_T_Han Neither are ppl posting about the recent 'Ethnic "Unity" Law' introduced in China which codifies forced assimilation and genocide of Tibetans. People are self-immolating themselves, but ppl are not talking about it.

Not enough ppl are commenting on another parallel btw the 2 Chinese mathematicians, besides fact they entered Peking U at the same time: their names. Both have 1-character given names: Wang Hong & Deng Yu. A Chinese name usually has 1-character surname followed by 2-character given name. & both given names are elemental: Hong = rainbow, Yu = flame. We can reasonably translate their names as Rainbow Wang & Fire Deng.

The French are claiming the Chinese Fields Medalist. What a time to be alive.

not at all surprised to see the same familiar pattern running through this year’s medalists: 1) grew up in cognitively stimulating, autonomy-supportive homes (parents in math, science, or adjacent tech fields) 2) books on math were devoured very early on - Hong Wang: "She’d get more math books from the bookstore and solve all their problems as well.” - Jacob Tsimerman: “His mother also began handing him textbooks.” - Yu Deng: “basically read all the books in our study.” - Pardon took Duke math courses while still in high school 3) intense obsession (for some, impractical) 4) quiet, kind, and remarkably unpretentious great profiles all around; very worth reading in full.

Every four years, the math world’s preeminent awards are given to the finest minds of a generation. The young Fields and Abacus Medal winners — all under 40 on the first day of the year — have reshaped mathematics and theoretical computer science. Here are the #ICM2026 winners:

Most people don’t know what the KMT (@kuomintang) did to Taiwanese people during martial law era. My grandparents’ generation lived it. Now the CCP wants to be next. Who the fuck in their free mind would want Taiwan under authoritarians from China again?

Who is this amazing person at FT who chose this badly done caricature as the magazine cover? You could not hide your disdain even when writing how Yang succeeded against odds. Not that it matters for Moonshot, but shows you in poor light.

China’s AI race has been a battle for talent, with deep-pocketed tech groups aggressively poaching from smaller start-ups. Throughout this, Moonshot founder Yang Zhilin has kept one of China’s strongest research teams together ft.trib.al/BHOQtfo

@wagmi_xyz_fin @weijie444 @OpenAI oh really? because they have invented new math more than rest of humanity? oh, wait - maybe because apes like you - who can't think beyond their own narcissism are born amongst them. Got it.

I am overseeing a few papers at NeurIPS this time - and I can identify many are from paper mill and collusion labs - could also tell from specific reviewer giving weirdly positive rating. Let me tell you, you scumbags - your paper is going to be rejected.

@WhileTravelling While I don't agree with the blacklist - aren't students of both university asked to be members of CPC? So, basically most students are member of a political entity engrossed in genocide, racism & subversion - Is it fine for you if the racism is directed at people of color only?

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is where I teach. To be honest, I understand why institutions like Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Fudan University would make some people nervous enough to push for blacklists. All I hear is "we're worried about your talent and try to keep them out of the room!”. What an unintended compliment! China keeps investing in talent, research, manufacturing and ecosystems that turn ideas into reality. Universities like Shanghai Jiao Tong University produces the future! Obviously now universities become targets when they're producing the engineers, scientists and innovators who will define the next industrial era. Now some policymakers try to blacklist the competition because of this sense of entitlement that only they should have access to the world’s best talent and innovation, not China or anyone else. Gosh🤦‍♀️ Instead of building better universities, educating more engineers, or accelerating innovation at home, some policymakers reach for ever-longer restriction lists. What an old strategy in the age of AI! History has never been particularly kind to civilizations that tried to regulate away someone else's progress instead of out-innovating it. The future belongs to those who build it, not those who spend their time writing blacklist policies. I’m proud to be an industry expert teaching at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 加油 jiāyóu SJTU!

The Chinese do not need to distill anymore. They've climbed up the proverbially tech tree that to climb higher, they need to do actual frontier work. Distillation is marginal. Any lobbying or legislation that calls for banning open weight models in the name of "distillation" is total BS. This is a fight against future American innovation. The labs know that open weight models completely commoditize their revenue generator. They know that we will optimize it to 1/100th the costs. They know that we will stop concentrating our workloads on them. If we start using open models, they lose the understanding of workloads that they can build products around to *replace* your products as they move up to the app layer. Remember: *they* trained on humanity's data and didn't pay a cent. If you own intelligence, you can tax humanity. Do not let them fool you.
