Crazy times! On July 22 we found a solution to one of the five major problems in quantum information theory usig AI. The problem is distillability or un-distillability of Werner states. We checked the computations and they are correct. The really crazy thing is this: just around this time there were 2 other groups who cracked this. First there was a group who just recently posted a paper about this on arxiv, it appeared on July 23. Second, there was an announcement from a different group yesterday (July 24) with no arxiv but a public overleaf. We can prove that we had the result before the arxiv paper appeared, and we can post our new paper on monday, it can appear on tuesday. So everybody was pretty much around the same time. Lots of idiots will make mathematical breakthroughs, but they won't get any meaningful credit. Everyone can tell who was a good mathematician in the before times and who is using AI. The problem case is math PhD students. Two things will happen: 1) Math PhD students will pivot to areas where AI is currently weak (a rapidly shrinking pond) 2) Math will become more reliant on human referrals in other areas (it will be extremely hard for anyone not from a top PhD program to get good jobs) But I think these trends will be short-lived for reasons discussed here: x.com/Jabaluck/statu… Although mathematicians might get away with pretending otherwise for some length of time: x.com/Jabaluck/statu…

GPT-5.6 Sol has claimed to resolved one of the five major problems in quantum information theory announced by KCIK (which carries a cash prize). We (@Quantum_Kishor @TobiasHaug_Q ) sat down to verify its claimed proof and surprisingly, we found another paper published the very next day, with NO AI acknowledgment, containing a proof and phrasing similar to what we got when we prompted it ourselves before the result was announced. An interesting coincidence!

I am so tired of seeing these posts. I am so tired of seeing my beloved field of study be the testing lab for a technology that is disrupting everyday life at such a high pace. Mathematics were always about the beauty of seeing the ideas of a person unfolded in an extremely precise language so we can all look into a mathematician's mind and see their purest form of ideas, their understanding of a problem, their style, their way of communicating to other fellow researchers through mathematical results... this often transcends the common language humans use to communicate with each other and it is incredibly exciting to bump into shared ideas another person had thousands of kilometers away several years ago without even knowing them. I am extremely unexcited about AI-breakthroughs in Mathematics in the same way I am extremely unexcited about a picture created by AI or an AI-generated video, not to speak about AI-generated text. Mathematics requires soul and intention. Mathematics need not be useful by definition, Mathematics are pure art that need hard work and effort to understand. The high you get when a year of work gets condensed in a one-page result is incomparable to anything else and, certainly, a machine is not apt to relate to humans in such a humane way. I am not interested in the truth of the results. I am interested in how was the mind behind a result able to connect those dots. I am interested in the diversity human thoughts bring to Mathematics. I am not interested in a bunch of servers running probabilities to return a Theorem, even if true: that lacks the objective of Mathematics as I see them.
