U-534 event this Friday at @WestApproaches! Pop in between 12:30 and 14:30 to listen to our #shipwreckords that spent decades underwater, handle artefacts, and chat to one of our team about all things #uboat. No extra charge (just museum entry), should be a nice geeky afternoon.

@kreuger62 We may restore small areas to show what its original condition would have been, but the 50 years under the sea is part of its story, so whilst we will ensure it wont corrode further, we want to keep a light touch on restoration.

@howtofixauboat Fantastic! Will you leave the boat like it is? Preserving its interior by stabilizing corrosion? Or try to restore it?

@Malcmoore52 I'll be honest, I'm not sure ours is in any fit state to be going anywhere 🤣 However there's a Type VII floating replica used for filming that might be going spare once the Das Boot series finishes! Did you see the guy who turned a narrowboat into a u-boat?

@howtofixauboat I'd love to see a U-Boat sail up the Manchester Ship Canal during the summer traders could do with an extra attraction encouraging more prospective customers into the area.🤔

@James1940 There's very likely a WW2 U-Boat beached and partially visible above water too, U-852. Infamous for her senior officers being executed for war crimes. The trouble is it's in Somalia...which might as well be the bottom of the Marianas Trench as far as safe, easy access goes.

@NotMarkMonro Oh excellent! Marc seemed proud of em. One upside is that it'll be a lot easier to fly my drone now. Downside is that there's not much point flying the drone when the boat is covered by giant sheets! 🤣

@stuartG666 Nope, that's a great use of the recordings I think! Though there are better digitised copies of many of these records anyway, we'll put up a youtube playlist soon.

@Dunkirk1940M @09EA63 @RitaGamer @USAS_WW1 To be fair, we've recently started doing comparisons of photos taken in the 90s vs today and very little has changed! Some of the wooden structures inside have suffered, like the lockers, but otherwise it's not fared badly over 30 years.

@09EA63 @howtofixauboat @RitaGamer @USAS_WW1 From your images, we would have visited around the same time. What I recall, vs what is left now is pitiful. My party were told the photo ban was due to someone having taken hi-res images and selling them online, without benefit to the Uboat.

Nazi Germany's U-237 breaching the surface in the North Atlantic, 1942. The periscope in the U-boats could be adjusted up and down several degrees by its operator.

@09EA63 @RitaGamer @USAS_WW1 I've never understood why they didn't allow photos inside! It's made it harder for us to assess the deterioration over time since there's hardly any decent quality pics to compare to...

We're happy to announce that U-534 will be joined by our new acquisition - a TBM Avenger. These torpedo bombers are famed for their use in the Pacific, but also served with distinction against u-boats in the Atlantic. Thanks @IWMDuxford for your support in making this happen.
