Challenger 1’s and CVRT’s of the 17th/21st Lancers in an aerial photograph with the tanks forming the shape of the ‘motto’ of the regiment, see image 2 for reference. Challenger 1’s form the outlines of the skull and crossbones, the eyes of the skull formed by the regimental 2iC (Second in Command) and one of the Squadron Leaders. The nose of the skull is formed by the CO’s tank with 2x CVRT Sultan command vehicles on the flanks. The teeth of the skull being formed by the REME LAD (light aid detachment) with Chieftain ARV’s (armoured recovery vehicles), finally with Recce Troop’s CVRT’s forming the majority of the motto banner. Unlike other armies, the British Army utilises regiment/squadron/troop nomenclature for tank/cavalry units, as do many other commonwealth nations, rather than the usual battalion/company/platoon terms used by other countries.

@johnmilbank3 I know how you feel. Ive got Scots, English and Irish blood, no welsh sadly. This nationalist crap is attempting to split it up in smaller portions, when currently the country belongs to all of us. Nationalism breaks nations. In the 21st century id hoped we had learned better.

As half English and half Scottish I feel wholly British. If the UK breaks up I will feel I have lost my country. I could not comfortably feel only English. There are very large numbers of people living in England who feel like this. I think it is a problem.

@thinkdefence He cares, which, with the exception of Wallace and Mordaunt, is more than be said of many past incumbents.

For what its worth, I think John Healey has been a decent defence secretary. He has to work within the constraints of the cabinet system, and in reality, has little room for manoeuvre anyway. Seems a genuine sort who understands defence, and that goes a long way in my book.

@ClarkeMicah @JamesDeroest The first generation, there wasnt much in it but convienience. In one magazine it was reckoned the Black 5 actually gave better performance than the Class 40, its partial replacement. But you needed a top link crew, and a steam locomotive in top notch condition.

.@jamesderoest. Why are diesels automatically more modern than steam locomotives? Each of these is modern in its own way. Whereas motor cars are a backward step from any rail transport, crude, huge rolling resistance, wasteful, unhealthy, dangerous, space-hungry. .
