The irony is that saying sorry is what Christian leadership should look like. Couldn’t be prouder of @AndyByfield_22 but so sad that it was impossible for us to continue.

@KateAndreyev @carlmchambers @AnglicanFutures Thanks Kate I accepted my victim status a long time ago. But victims with power are different to the rest. I wasn’t simply a victim. I stood next to a very bad man and didn’t spot what he was doing. There’s culpability in that. So I’m saying sorry.

@DanLeafe1 @AnglicanFutures No I’m very saddened by the decline in the standard of their care for victims since the original review. It’s a marked departure from their previous stance in all the ways you outline. I can only assume it’s to protect themselves from reputational damage or legal liability.

@AnglicanFutures gave notice of this post to Emmanual Church, Wimbledon, where Jonathan Fletcher was long-term vicar so they could address criticisms of their statement if they wished. Over a week later- no response public or private. Is this acceptable? anglicanfutures.org/post/have-any-…

@AndyByfield_22 @sleafe97 Ah no, not re-traumatising. We value the work of GRACE very highly. Almost feels like a different life now those months/years we spent trying to raise concerns & propose healthier ways forward. I'm glad we tried atleast.

@hoyleanna @AndyByfield_22 @DanLeafe1 Oh boy. When they are saying 'there's no cover up' and literally covering things up... Having hopped back on Twitter to follow this and what is happening with Dane Ortlund (sadly similar patterns) I'm now seeing things on Josh Howerton... it's all the same story.

@AndyByfield_22 @DanLeafe1 So very sorry Andy. I can’t bring myself to “like” this as it is the wrong response to your openness about such a huge betrayal but I want you to know you both have our support & prayers

"... the absolute destruction we felt at JF’s betrayal." That's heartbreaking. It makes me so cross at those who repeatedly minimised Jonathan Fletcher’s abuse because 'it wasn't as bad as' wasn't 'criminal', '...needed to be seen in context' etc when it was so 'destructive'.

Seems right to repost this as it was the first time I heard a married couple articulate the absolute destruction we felt at JF’s betrayal. Thank you again @matt_redman and Beth Redman for your bravery, truth and light.

@hoyleanna You are so kind. It wasn't complicated back then & isn't complicated now. We don't teach people the Bible because we love the Bible. We teach people the Bible because we love people. All we have to do is do the latter as best as the charis granted to us allows.

@DanLeafe1 Destruction is the right word. I spent hours driving around in those early months after the news broke sobbing. It was agony, a real grief. I know many others experienced the same and worse.

Today sees the release of ‘Let There Be Light’ - a documentary exploring the pattern of harmful behaviours experienced under the leadership of Mike Pilavachi, a prominent figure in the UK Church. Our hope is for this film to be something of a care-package for the hurting, at the same time asking how we might become a healthier Church in the future. We know it won’t serve everyone, but we pray it will help some. We tell our story to shine light and help validate other’s experiences. It would have been much easier to say nothing - but a culture of silence up until now has been a significant force. Other voices speaking into this documentary are Dr Diane Langberg (recognised for her 50 years of clinical work with trauma victims), Dr Chi-Chi Obuaya (a respected London Harley Street consultant psychiatrist) and Dr Amy Orr-Ewing (a regarded UK theologian with a passion to advocate for survivors of abuse.) The film also points to some key organisations who provide support in this area and also safeguarding resources for churches. While speaking on a painful subject it’s also important to acknowledge all of the pastors out there faithfully loving those that God has entrusted to them. This is a story Beth and I chose to tell. Our prayer is for the healing of yesterday’s wounds and a brighter, safer Church tomorrow. Let there be Light. youtube.com/watch?v=YVZkgd…

@AndyByfield_22 @DanLeafe1 Protecting the work involved shredding the Iwerne prayer diary each term in case ‘our work misconstrued.’ A direct JF quote. As a parent, I’d have been deeply concerned that the old boys’ network had a list of with my child’s name, age and school. At least GDPR prevents this now.

@DanLeafe1 And yet….the silence Dan. The utter silence. ‘Protect the work’ is the mantra. I can think of nothing that will prevent the work from flourishing more than this behaviour by its leaders.

@AndyByfield_22 To speak is difficult- once it's admitted that sacred cows are actually golden calves all control is lost & all things are up for grabs. To speak means admitting what's been hidden, bad judgements etc. That should be possible but too many 'leaders' don't have the emotional range

@AndyByfield_22 @hoyleanna @sleafe97 They do do social media, but are not allowed to admit it, or discuss what they read (eg “like”-ing) because that falls under the broad umbrella of “gossip” as determined by the leaders, who (the leaders tell us) must be obeyed.
