Three teenagers escaped prison after gang-raping two schoolgirls. The country is shocked and disgusted. But it is explicit government policy to send fewer criminals under eighteen to prison. I’ve written to David Lammy demanding he changes course.

A major reason that it didn’t make sense to use AI to write an essay about a substantive topic is that until you write the essay you don’t actually know what you want to say or what you think. You think you do, but it is the writing itself that actually gets the thinking done.

A year ago we began to soak in the atmosphere and meet the nature around the Prespa Lakes. Including a first meeting with a European pelican, and woods full of nightingales and golden orioles.

So often an organization that has behaved wrongly will engage in bullying you & paint you as the wrongdoer in an attempt to cover up or at least muddy the waters.

In 1944 my Great Aunt Molly, head of Stroud High School, gave a talk to the BBC about her faith and her job. Her words seem very apt today: ‘power-sense, unless controlled by an authority outside this world, leads to tyranny over others’ #fletcherculture

@paulwaddell @Richard_Scorer As far as I know, the terms of reference & contract for the review were never published. It should be possible to do that without revealing victim identities.

Emmanuel Wimbledon commissioned a ‘lessons learned’ review with parameters to ensure nobody else complicit in the culture was held accountable. They, and this segment of conservative evangelicalism, have clearly learnt very little.
Anglican Futures@AnglicanFutures

It is extremely depressing that after expecting survivors to share their stories, spending months of people's time and more than £100k on a lessons learned review, Emmanuel Church Wimbledon can put out such an appalling statement - Here are 10 free lessons anglicanfutures.org/post/have-any-…

Just listening to @AndrewGraystone on BBC Radio 4 re why the Church of England finds it so hard to learn from awful cases like Jonathan Fletcher & John Smyth. Starts 25 mins in. The court case victim has been so courageous. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

@carlmchambers @AnglicanFutures I’m also sorry it’s taken me so long to say it. Truth is the story has destroyed me. My faith shattered into a billion pieces. The result is I’ve not been strong enough to say it until now - but we have to recognise that silence harms the real victims of JF.

@rjl1689 Those who are Christians believe that sin comes out of our hearts, not from a background or context. I agree that certain situations (e.g. where there is access to the vulnerable, power differential or largely unaccountable power) are an opportunity for sin & power abuse.

@KateAndreyev I’m sure many are. My intended point was that background/context is a relevant factor in how and why sin occurs. Different contexts create different risks, hence when asking what went wrong we should consider as many factors as we can.

It’s a big mistake to see the Fletcher culture problem as a public school/Iwerne/class issue. It’s not. It’s a sin issue, an abuse issue. Many who are not from that background are involved and abusing power.
