We’re pleased to share that our Winter Garden recently starred in @WhichUK Gardening magazine’s trial of winter-flowering shrubs. Conducted by @JaniceShipp it assessed plants on flower duration, impact, scent & insect appeal & form. See some of their Best Buys below. [1/2]

🧵 30. According to a 17th century proverb, a COCKSTRIDE—literally, one step of a cockerel—is the amount by which the days seem to lengthen after the New Year.

The whole honours system is corrupt and needs a major overhaul IMO. Can anyone explain why Stephen Fry gets a knighthood when Alan Titchmarsh, who has done so much for horticulture and for charities, is just a CBE? Why do so many well-paid actors get top honours?

@Concraigsmith I’d like to know why wonderful Roy Lancaster does not have a knighthood with all he does for horticulture. Perhaps not enough bowing and scraping - although Titchmarsh does plenty of that and it’s apparently not working. In fact does ANYONE in horticulture have a knighthood?

Honey bees account for 57% of city of London pollinators 11% in towns nationally, due of course to people installing hives to help bees. But so many hives compete with other bees according to this research from 'planting London together'. #greenercities

I promised any mentions of my cancer would be at best occasional. This, hopefully, will be the last for a very long time indeed. A short thread follows - please bear with it. 🧵 (Or don’t - that’s okay too!) News last week was the best I could possibly have hoped for… (1/#)

@GuyBarter I have picked a total of 7 pods of peas from repeated sowings from one packet of pea seeds. A combination of failure to germinate and massacre by molluscs. Oh well, there's always next year.

Only one pea picking left, after good crops since mid-May. Main veg, with braid beans, for early summer. If emergence had been >25% the crop would have been embarrassingly abundant. As it is there have been plenty. #allotment

Here’s a great passionflower for the impatient gardener, #passiflora incanata. This one is flowering 6 months after sowing. It is hardy if kept dry, produces edible fruit, readily crosses with other passionflowers &freely produces pretty scented flowers. What more could you want?
