Part 2. Genghis Khan didn’t break through the Great Wall. He walked around it. The Mongols crossed it again in 1550, and the Manchus crossed it four separate times before 1644. The wall failed at being a wall almost every time someone serious tested it. In 1211, Genghis Khan’s general Jebe took the supposedly impregnable Juyong Pass without a real fight. He attacked, then faked a retreat. The Jin defenders chased him into the ambush, leaving the gates open behind them. The Mongols rode straight back through. A fortress that 10,000 men were supposed to hold fell to a single trick. In 1550, a Mongol leader named Altan Khan walked up to the Datong garrison and bribed them to look the other way. Then he circled around, found a weak section at Gubeikou, and raided the suburbs of Beijing. One contemporary account says the raid killed 60,000 people and took 40,000 prisoners. The Ming wall was fully manned. The wall kept failing for the same reason. It was 21,000 km long, held by underpaid farmer-soldiers, and one bribe or one weak section was enough. “The strength of a wall depends on the courage of those who defend it.” That line is widely attributed to Genghis Khan. The wall spent 2,000 years proving him right. But the wall wasn’t designed to be impenetrable. It was designed to slow attackers down, force them through known choke points, and buy enough time for the actual response to mobilize. That part worked. And the system that made it work is the part the photos never show. The Ming had 25,000 watchtowers along the wall, sitting 2.5 to 5 km apart and staffed around the clock. Smoke during the day, fire at night, flags when it rained. The number of fires told you how many enemies were coming and which direction they were coming from. One fire meant a small raid. Four meant a full invasion. A signal could bounce from the western desert to Beijing in hours, tower by tower, faster than any horse could ride it. Wolf dung was the preferred fuel for daytime smoke. It burned with a thick straight column that stayed visible for miles in wind. The same dynasty that built the wall also figured out which animal droppings made the best smoke signals. The construction itself was just as strange. Ming builders mixed boiled sticky rice porridge with lime to make mortar. The starch in the rice (a molecule called amylopectin) bonded the lime into a composite material that has held bricks together for 600 years. A Zhejiang University team that analyzed the recipe in 2010 found it was the world’s first known organic-inorganic composite mortar. A Ming-era tomb built with the same mix once survived a modern bulldozer. The bulldozer lost. So the world’s most famous defensive structure was actually a 21,000 km information network, held together by rice. The wall is famous for the wrong reason.

This is very Jewish logic ‘You chose to get addicted to drugs/gambling/pornography! It’s the user’s fault that we took advantage of his base instincts, not ours’ Yeah, a group of foreigners taking advantage of desperate people and impoverishing half the country with predatory loans is bad actually

I’m just gonna say it Yeah Jews were expelled from Britain in 1290 because of blood libel and because of usury What’s odd with all the arguments about money lenders in medieval Europe is… They had no problem with borrowing money from Jews just paying it back They cancelled their debts when they expelled Jews and stole their property and now claim Jews were expelled for “reasons” Yeah. Greed and hypocrisy mainly. That’s all

While I love Aliens and the queen was a cool, the original idea deleted from film 1, that captured hosts morphed into eggs and that there was no queen, is the more disturbing and "alien" concept for how alien life might function. Mimicing and "improving" upon the host. Genius.

This is a rare behind-the-scenes shot of the original Xenomorph from the 1979 film Alien. The image clearly reveals the eerie “human” skull visible beneath the creature’s translucent dome. A deliberate design choice by H.R. Giger. He included it to suggest that the alien mimics distinctive features of its host.

There is no objectively "best sword", because a sword needs to be paired with a fighting style in order to work. A weaponsmith at the Texas Ren Faire told me about the time he was at another Ren Faire (not in Texas), and a shirtless guy cosplaying a barbarian (I assume) admired one of the smith's Italianesque schiavonas. He picked it up, and the smith said, "Careful. It's sharp." The faux barbarian said, "Don't worry. I'm an expert." He then immediately started doing Kendo-style katana movies. The smith went to stop him, but it was too late. Faux barbarian slid the schiavona over his shoulder (perfectly safe with a katana) and the double-edged, razor blade left a 6 inch gash in his trapezius.
