@Catholic_bro @ihymacc Yeah, this is Gibson justifying Catholic European colonialism (and all it’s genocidal crimes) as bringing civilization to savages.

Also part of the reason I think some people find this scene a bit hard to parse. They can't imagine a film having the level of contradiction towards the thoughts of race and colonialism ESPECIALLY when you have the contradiction of Mel himself

@sjcbristol @AhmadxVibez The end of the film was a racist justification of Catholic European colonialism (ie genocide and slavery). Great film up until Mel shows you what his deeper intent was.

@AhmadxVibez @kazoku886 The racist ending ruined the movie for me. By showing the arrival of Spanish Catholics he was implying that the horrible crimes of European colonialists were justified because the people’s they conquered were ungodly and morally wretched.

@PapaleoMspep @ijbailey It is quite possible that part of the reason Americans support harsh criminal sentencing is because they are perceived to disproportionately affect black people. If so, that would be an example of ongoing systemic racism. Attitudes towards funding of welfare programs as well.

The average McDonalds restaurant takes in ~$4million/yr in revenue. They spend ~$2 million in non payroll operating expenses. Raising the minimum wage to $25/hr would give each of the ~50 full time employees a pay rate of $51,000/yr. That would increase their payroll costs to $2.5 million per year Each McDonalds would operate at a net loss, unless they massively cut payroll costs through automation. That means job losses. The laws of economics are undefeated.
Ro Khanna@RoKhanna

I co-introduced historic legislation to increase the minimum wage to $25. As someone who taught economics at Stanford, here is why it makes sense. The real minimum wage was $14 in 1968. Today it is half, but productivity has increased 2.5x. Instead of extractive capitalism, we need a free enterprise system that pays workers what they are worth.

The White House demanding that a network fire one of its hosts, while taking regulatory action against ABC's corporate parent to pressure, threaten and force them to do so, is an obvious attack on the First Amendment. It's at least as bad as what the Twitter Files showed: the Biden Adm pressuring and threatening social media platforms to ban dissent:

There really is only one way to improve representation for all Americans in Congress: UNCAP THE HOUSE! It’s what the founders intended; they did NOT want to see Congressional Districts that were bigger than most major cities. Want to dilute the influence of courts and partisans, UNCAP THE HOUSE!

@ScottPresler @BarackObama Can we all agree that Republicans would be decimated if districts were drawn without political bias? I know you agree, but doubt you will have the balls to say it. You only win by rigging the system. Sad.

@BarackObama Can we all agree that it’s racist to draw congressional maps based solely on skin color? Can we also agree that eradicating race-based maps is a good thing? By the way, Utah’s only black member of Congress is being replaced by a white man because democrats drew new maps.

Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach. The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.

Nope, you openly sneered over the ignorance of rural America and turned those towards me in just about every class we had together. Then, you turned a dying Nebraskan’s take that we should live life more thoughtfully into an asinine liberal dog whistle. Ben Sasse has more political talent, thoughtfulness, and humanity in his cancer-ridden pancreas than you could hope to have in a lifetime. I’m done engaging with you. I’m going outside to play with my three kids. It’s a gorgeous day, and I’m going to enjoy it rather than fight on X. ✌️

Fish, we were undergrads at Yale together. I was the first-gen kid from rural Nebraska you regularly belittled. Your dad was in Congress for 40 years, and you’ve spent life with your ego stoked by proxy. Leave my Senator’s name out of your mouth, you spoiled insufferable brat.
Fish Stark@fishstark

All right @BenSasse, let's make a bet. Let's divide the US in half. I'll let you pick which half. In your half, you ban Candy Crush. In my half we institute 16 weeks of paid parental leave, universal childcare, & a restored child tax credit. Let's see which has more babies.

This is where the “both sides” caucus loses me. These examples aren’t in the same universe. The first is about private citizens acting. The other is the president putting his face and stamp on everything. It’s not just that one is “worse.” It’s that they are entirely different.
Billy Binion@billybinion

Obama worship was real. His face was plastered on clothing. I hated it, as did many on the right. This stuff is *so* much worse. I find it viscerally disgusting. Worshiping a man like this—and forcing taxpayers to fund it—isn’t ~owning the libs.~ It’s a form of weakness.

I don't know why people argue with me over George Floyd. There are maybe like 12 people who know more about this case than me and none of them are academics or leftist. - It took 17 minutes for EMS to go 2 blocks because they went to the wrong address. - Chauvin called EMS 30 seconds into Floyds Arrest. - Floyd is seen on Camera consuming pills - Chauvin was trained in the technique he used and it was retroactively made illegal and prior training was hidden from the jury - The medical examiner admitted if this happened at Georges home with no police, it was an OD - EMS didn't hook George up to Oxygen when put in the ambulance. They forgot to hook the tubing to the O2 tanks - Floyd still had a faint heartbeat when he reached the hospital despite all of this
