This atmospheric shot is the Koppenberg as Tour of Flanders riders see it, minus baying bike fans, after the 90-degree bend at its foot. It’s steep, you hit 12 percent, 14 then 16 percent, and 20 percent gradient in the first 200 metres. But gradient isn’t all the Koppenberg has, there’s its wicked cobblestones. Koppenberg means cobbled hill, ‘koppen’ is Flemish for heads but also commonly used to describe large cobblestones. Smaller ones are ‘kaseien’. The stones on the Koppenberg are big, but not as big as they were. You often hear old bike riders say “It was much tougher in my day.” Well, with the Koppenberg they are right. The old surface was wicked, big crooked granite blocks with gaps between them, and all laid with an absurd camber. The middle of the road was much higher than the edges, and the only safe pace to ride was in concrete drainage gullies either side. Really, it was brutal. So brutal that on its Tour of Flanders debut in 1976 the Koppenberg made Eddy Merckx walk the final few metres. Every year after saw carnage, with riders fighting for the gullies because only the most gifted could ride on the cobbles. Then 1987 happened. The Danish rider Jesper Skibby was leading the race when it hit the climb with the race director’s car right behind him. Problem was the best of rest were right behind the car. The driver panicked, tried to edge past Skibby, who fell and was run over. Luckily only his bike went under the wheels, but the Koppenberg had gone too far. It was deemed unsafe and removed from the race, and there it lay until 2001. Resurfacing work, partly financed by selling all the old cobbles to bike fans, created the climb we have today. The Koppenberg is not what it was, but it’s safe. 📸Cycling Legends Collection #cycling #cyclinglife #bike #bikelife #cyclingphotos #roadbike #cyclist #ciclismo #bicycle #roadcycling #instacycling #cyclingshots #fitness #cycle #cyclingpics #strava #sport #bikes #bicicleta #ride #instabike #retrocycling #cyclinghistory #cyclinglegends #koppenburg
