If you did, I don’t think you would consider this appropriate. Just because something can be done does not mean it should be done.

The family should have told him where to go, I know my family would have done. @CatholicBishops this priest needs to go back to seminary, a funeral is the appropriate time for family and friends to share memories. The disrespect shown to this grieving family is disgusting.

Lot of interesting commentary on both sides of this incident. I'm not Catholic so I won't pretend to understand the ins and outs of whether a eulogy is appropriate at a funeral, but watching this the thing that strikes me isn't *what* the Priest did, but *how* he did it.

We all lie, sin, and fall short. That is why we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I go at least once a month, humbly asking God for mercy and forgiveness. Through absolution, I am given the grace to get back up and try again, striving not to repeat my sins. I fail, and I return. Such is the human condition. As Saint Padre Pio said: “Even a clean, empty, locked room gathers dust after a week.”

Once a people are cut off from their roots, they can be blown about like plastic bags in the wind. The Catholic Church has long been the most attacked institution of all. Why? Because it is the Truth, the Life, and the Way. Look at Ireland: as faith has declined, sin, disorder, and confusion seem to have risen alongside it. Christ Himself said the gate to Heaven is narrow. Politics and voting alone will not save us. But I believe that if Ireland returned to Catholicism, we would begin to restore order, meaning, reverence, and hope once again.

Whether OR NOT you think a eulogy is appropriate, whether OR NOT you think the Priest was right to step in - I feel like it shouldn't be controversial to say the Priest comes across a certain type of way in the way he speaks and the words he chooses that rubs me up wrong?

While a traditional eulogy is not permitted, the Church does provide alternatives and guidelines where family members and friends can provide words of remembrance. It is recommended that priests speak with family beforehand and set out guidelines. He obviously didn’t

Yes at times the eulogy can be lengthy but the congregation are invariably well known to the deceased and/or relatives. It's absoulately highly inappropriate to make an overt rebuke during the funeral Mass. It's the final farewell for a loved one. Appalling.
