Today it is Mumbai. Tomorrow, it will be your city.
The New Indian Express has this terrifying headline:
#Mumbai has just 40 days of water left. Our reservoirs are hitting dead storage levels while we wait on the mercy of a delayed monsoon and unpredictable El Niño cycles.
But here is the real tragedy: Why do we only cry for water during the scorching peak of summer, only to forget the crisis the moment the first raindrop falls?
True #water security demands three immediate, non-negotiable shifts:
1️⃣ Fix the Accountability Loop: RWAs and individuals must take the lead to install and maintain functional rainwater harvesting systems, backed by strict, recurring municipal audits to ensure every drop is captured.
2️⃣ Involve the Community Housing societies and resident communities must be actively involved in tracking, saving, and managing their local water footprints.
3️⃣ Take Personal Ownership:As individuals, we must take the pain to ensure our own homes, terraces, and properties are actively contributing to groundwater recharge and water conservation.
We cannot control the climate, but we can control our preparedness.
Let’s start harvesting the monsoons before our taps run completely dry.
