Punchline is thinks $AMZN ad business grows 30% CAGR over next five years.
Highlights
-75 person team responsible for selling full suite of ads across sponsored listings, DSP and streaming TV.
-Estimate 50-60% of AMZN ad rev from the site (sponsored product, brand, display)
-80% of advertising rev from app/website is Sponsored Products. This revenue correlates w/ GMV for largest customers (duh, more sales = more advertising), and has net new growth from smaller / newer advertisers.
-Think there is good room to run w/ middle to long tail of brands. Couple years to run but then Sponsored Products gets saturated.
-Mobile has more ads bc propensity to scroll is higher. [Funny, was always intuitive that mobile had smaller surface area so would monetize less than desktop – reminder of the difficult of predicting all this]
-Larger advertisers rely less on sponsored products
Sponsored Brand
-Has done poorly bc it is a top-of-funnel product but packaged and sold as a performance product. So ROAS always seemed poor.
-Also people just go to page w/ a ton of that brand’s products so lower conversion from there on first touch.
-But now AMZN showing customers how Sponsored Products drives net new customers to brand which is important, and also now can show the touches between Sponsored Brand and Sponsored product.
-Punchline is Brand + Product does pretty well and now showing advertisers measurement to prove it
Sponsored Display
-Is a product positioned for advertisers that are unsophisticated with creative / bidding. Automatically makes the ad and can handle re-targeting.
-Generally 2/3 on-site and 1/3 off-site.
-Growing much faster bc smaller base but also bc display inventory is unlimited vs hit limits on AMZN.com
DSP (off-site performance)
-Going to see more advertisers use AMZN bc they think transaction data is going to help them. Think they may look at $TTD and $GOOG DSPs and say I’d put more dollars in AMZN bc their data has to be helpful.
-AMZN does pretty well in bake-offs – not a lot of fees for this data vs TTD.
-Probably can grow 40-50% yy for a while

-Probably grows 40% for off-site brand
-Not sure how big Sponsored TV might be – designed to get mid-market and small clients into Prime Video, Freevee, Twitch, etc. If it hits could be big.
