Sad day for Indian democracy. Once again, Congress has betrayed the women of this country, like in the past, by their opposition to the Women’s Reservation Bill. History will record this. And the women of India surely will make the Congress pay for this sin.

The birth anniversary of Ullaskar Dutta. It's rare that one life story encompasses both an abiding revolutionary passion and an amazing love story. But Ullaskar was that man. Ullaskar was a Presidency College student, an activist rusticated for slapping a professor for making fun of Bengalis. Also the romantic interest of Lila, the daughter of firebrand leader Bipin Chandra Pal. After Ullaskar left college, he became an expert bomb maker for Jugantar, and was finally arrested and transported to Cellular jail in the Alipore Bomb trial case in 1908. He was tortured so badly there that he was finally committed to a mental asylum. By the time he returned, over a decade had passed, Lila had presumed he had passed as none of her letters reached him, and with a heavy heart she had married. Ullaskar plunged back into the freedom struggle, was arrested again in the thirties, and after independence made his way to Calcutta from his native village in East Pakistan. And then he heard that Lila was a widow and paralysed below the waist. He immediately rushed to Bombay and they married and moved to Silchar, where he spent the rest of his days looking after her and teaching in a local school. He died in 1965, but if you visit Silchar, you may still hear tales of of their fabled 'Boma Dadu.'

The legislation to ensure women’s reservation in legislative bodies is a significant opportunity to do justice to women of our nation. Please do not deprive our Nari Shakti of new opportunities. If this amendment is passed unanimously, it will further empower the women of our country and strengthen our democracy. Let us come together today to create history. Let us ensure that the women of India, who are half of the nation’s population, receive their rightful due.
