@iamcal @richardosman @susannaclarke_ @sschweblin I really enjoy and appreciate your reading lists. Would love if you put asterisks (*) next to your highlights.

I've updated my 2025 reading list with the 121 books I read in the year. Highlights were The Thursday Murder Club by @richardosman, Piranesi by @susannaclarke_, The Repeat Room by Jesse Ball and Little Eyes by @sschweblin.

@joshu I think you either have to put a bunch of 221-2411’s on a rail, use the “mounting carrier” (up to 5), or go with a different brand that interlocks

@subhashdasyam @simonw That might apply in the Compaq bios case, but in this case I don’t think it can? Otherwise anyone who ever contributed to (or even looked at?) GPL code could never write any code again that wasn’t GPL’d. And that’s clearly not the case

1.29% similarity on JPlag is a strong data point, but the real problem isn't the output, it's the process. Blanchard was the maintainer for a decade. In traditional clean room methodology, he'd be disqualified from writing the replacement entirely. Having Claude do the typing doesn't fix that. His knowledge of the architecture, the edge cases, the design tradeoffs, all of that leaks into prompts whether you intend it or not.

The chardet open source library relicensed from LGPL to MIT two days ago thanks to a Claude Code assisted
"clean room" rewrite - but original author Mark Pilgrim is disputing that the way this was done justifies the change in license - my notes here: simonwillison.net/2026/Mar/5/cha…

@jordnb @alistaiir It’s one of many facilities that make up us-east-1 - the AZs are up to 100km apart

This year, Haley has taken some of the most difficult cat rescue cases, never giving up on the animals. I'd like to help her enter 2026 with some money for the coming challenges.
If you post a screenshot showing you donated at least $20, I'll answer a style-related question 🧵

thought I was going to get some sleep last night but I got word of a senior stray who was attacked by dogs and then hunkered down in a wet box she found unfortunately telling me an old cat is Damp and Sad is the #1 way to get me to drop everything and disobey traffic laws

@JoshConstine It’s been ~26 years so it seems silly to stop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@iamcal just here to say I love that you maintain a “weblog”. Something freeing about publishing via non-algorithmic RSS

@LetsTrekSpain @davkean That would have been an incredible W95 machine! High end when it came out was 90MHz Pentium and 8MB
English

We were running single core machines at 1.2 GHz, 64 *MB* RAM and spinning rust disks with average seek exceeding 10ms, that video was not our experience.

You used to be able to just create a Native GUI App in 10 seconds. No Electron, no Game Engines, no Web frameworks. Just a lean fast .EXE produced in seconds. Works on any Windows machine WITHOUT Internet connection. Software Development is actually going backwards.

@BellaRudd1 @HozaKeith @simonsarris Lego tolerances are between 2-10um, but maybe that matters more for brick/stud joints than for axles and pegs?
English

@HozaKeith @simonsarris getting sub-100um precision off mine which should be more than sufficient for lego-esque mechanical gizmos?
besides, learning to model tooth profiles is lotsa fun!

I’m excited to announce the launch of @Span_Platform’s AI Code Detector! 🚀
We all know how transformative AI coding assistants have been, but it's still hard to know what's AI vs. not & what impact it's ultimately having on quality, velocity, and security. Now you can with Span—powered by our machine learning model, span-detect-1, which detects AI-generated code with an industry-best 95% accuracy.
We can’t wait to see how this helps engineering leaders who want to lead with hard data, not hype. Try it out today—completely free.

@nssnmp5ffk @GergelyOrosz Not true. Tiny Speck was the original company name. We built Slack 100% ourselves.
