@Megatron_ron I think this is good. US core advanced technology will not be delivered to China, ensuring American dominance in AI. For the black market sellers, both Americans/Chinese citizens probably would be delighted to report them to be sanctioned/rewarded by US Commerce/China customs

@BRICSinfo That’s a massive win for American farmers if it holds through 2028. Billions flowing into U.S. agriculture could boost rural economies, stabilize demand, and strengthen trade ties after years of tension.

@Linahuaa @WestsideLAGuy The only reason why I speak positively about Deepseek is that it's open source. If every single latest LLM model out there is free for all general public to analyze the world would be greater innovative place.

@WestsideLAGuy Mainly due to having 1% of Openai's budget and compute. If you give DeepSeek the same resources, they're very likely the best lab on the planet. DeepSeek invented tons of techniques that both OpenAI and Anthropic adopted. It's opensource.

DeepSeek is reportedly auto-rejecting Chinese applicants who went to America for undergraduate. Having an undergrad from America usually means you went through the international school pipeline, which usually means that you had much less rigorous math training. It also means you're culturally White, and probably a bad fit for them. I have lots of students from Shanghai American School (#1 international school in the city)- and they have tons of bullshit filler classes like choir, abstract art, reading books about disabled/morbidly obese kids and writing essays about why fatshaming is bad. As the result- they're far behind in math and science. And they're somehow less competent at music and arts too because they skip the foundation and go straight to vibe-painting and virtue-yapping. American education is of very low quality imo... this isn't a China glazing post btw- I would take the average German grad from 20 years ago over today's American grads too. I would also take the average German (from 20 years ago) over the average Singaporean and Chinese.

@Zac_Pundi Nah. Too optimistic. Full Breakdown: 1) Possible, PAP is energy conscious 2) Already have a few 3) Nah, SG cannot innovate and thus no S&P500 company will survive 4) Same reasons as above 5) Same reasons as above 6) Not possible as nearby got a few already 7) No. Lmao.

Had a chat with my dad today. We made some predictions for Singapore over the next 10 years. Singapore will: 🏭 Build a mini nuclear reactor on one of its southern islands. It will power both the grid and a new gigawatt-scale data centre. 🎨 Set up a dedicated arts university. Growing artistry alongside finance and tech — same energy as when they built the Esplanade. 🏢 House the actual HQ of an S&P 500 tech company — not a twin HQ, the real one. We've already seen dual HQs like HSBC and Ingenico. The next step is a full migration by a US co. 🏆 Win a Nobel Prize. My bet is in materials science, quantum, or medical research. 👔 An ex-minister will take a leadership role at a global tech company. Think Nick Clegg at Meta, but Singapore's version. 🎢 Get a Disneyland. On top of USS. 💲USD:SGD parity, almost.

Many years ago, I gave two presentations on how China builds its industrial and technological ecosystem—one for an Indian audience and one for a Vietnamese audience. Although the content was largely the same and went into many details that were rarely mentioned in other settings, the feedback from the Vietnamese and Indian participants was strikingly different. When I discussed the gaps between Vietnam and China, my Vietnamese friends listened very attentively to my analysis of Vietnam’s weaknesses. They even proactively acknowledged Vietnam’s deficiencies and asked me to analyze more specific issues in greater detail. However, when I compared China and India, many Indian friends became quite argumentative. They tried to compete with or challenge the Chinese perspective on almost every point, to the point where I could barely develop my analysis. As a result, they might have won the debate, but missed a valuable opportunity to have a meaningful exchange. So, I came to know which country would be the real winner for "China+1" many years beforehand.

The spreadsheet math on this is brutal. She left roughly $54 million on the table. Yet she probably just made the best financial decision of her life. $1M in an S&P 500 index fund at age 20 compounds to approximately $58M in inflation-adjusted terms by age 80. The historical real return is about 7% annually over 97 years of data. Her annuity pays $52,000 a year. Over 60 years that totals $3.1M. The gap is 18x. Every finance account in these replies will tell you she's wrong. The compounding math is clear. Take the lump sum, put it in VOO, don't touch it for 60 years. The Certified Financial Planner Board says roughly a third of lottery winners declare bankruptcy within five years. Illinois court records show 28% of winners who won $50K or more went bankrupt in the same window. The average winner spends 60% of their winnings on family and friends in the first two years. She's 20. Peak impulsivity, minimal financial literacy, and every person she's ever met just found out she has a million dollars in her checking account. The $1M doesn't go into a Vanguard account. It goes into the most socially pressured spending environment a human being can occupy. $1,000 a week is a permanent $52K salary, tax-free in Canada, that arrives whether she makes good decisions or catastrophic ones. Can't be drained by a partner. Can't be lost to a scam. Can't be "invested" in a cousin's restaurant. Shows up every Friday for the rest of her life. The spreadsheet says lump sum by 18x. The data on what actually happens to people who receive $1M at 20 says she just bought the most expensive insurance policy in lottery history, and it was worth every dollar she gave up.
DividendBoomer@BoomerDivvies

An 20-year-old Canadian girl won $1M (tax free in Canada) in the lottery and chose $1,000/week instead of the lump sum. Is this wise or the worst financial decision of her life? What are you doing when this happens to you??
