Great conversation between @iamlambda and @Philosophi_Cat on this year’s Gauntlet. The topic of “RETVRN” came up. Cat made a great point that those trying to revive the traditions of old may suffer “blowback” by unleashing forces they aren’t equipped to handle or understand. I think this is exactly what happened to Jordan Peterson. He tried to revive the role of prophet, but approached God, Christ, and the Word as symbols and allegories, with no appreciation for Their actual power. If one calls upon the name of God, expect an answer, and pray it isn’t a rebuke. Dr. Peterson wasn’t equipped for the repercussions from such Forces, because he lacked respect for Them. He subsequently had a physical and emotional breakdown, and now he cries on screen constantly. There’s a lesson there. Thanks to both for the entertaining discussion. Hope to hear one again next year.

@iamlambda and @GreeneMan6 put on an excellent episode of The Gauntlet this year. My question to both is concerning the issue of men “dressing up.” Are opinions on this based largely on aesthetics, or are most opinions driven by climate? I hear so many say, “Men should make more of an effort?” I tend to think to myself, “I wonder if that person knows what 80% humidity and 95 degrees 4-5 months out of the year feels like?”

OTOH, St Thomas Aquinas would argue the real question is “does this person have the right and authority to demand this answer?” This includes a general defrerence to state authority, but with a gatekeeper hurdle of the state working towards the common good.
