@RutgersAltRoute A4 - HIB incidents can provide opportunities to develop conflict resolution skills and de-escalation strategies to mitigate the current issue.
Reflect on your knowledge and understanding of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) from course readings and your experience to respond to Question 4 #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
To start us off, here's Question 1! When considering your "practices", you can think about your classroom management, curriculum, instructional practices, the academic/social/emotional skills you teach, and the physical/virtual space of your classroom #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A5: Praising for effort instead of outcome has really flipped the script for me. I have made the mistake of saying, “Well you just have to do it.” I see opportunities to encourage just some effort in completing their work which will allow for better behaviors w/ better outcomes
This morning's 5th and final Q is on assessment #TeacherEd#GrowthMindset
“You can enhance or destroy students’ desire to succeed in school more quickly and permanently through your use of assessment than with any other tool you have at your disposal.” – Dr. Rick Stiggins
@RutgersAltRoute A4: Being that I am a science teacher I tell my kids that they must must must have pencils in my class because they have erasers and as a scientist you are going to be wrong way more than you are going to be right. Science is all about trial, error, a little bit of luck#TeacherEd
Feedback is a compass for improvement and not all feedback is created equally. For Q4 share your content area and consider your best practices and those you would like to try #TeacherEd#GrowthMindset
@RutgersAltRoute A3: Offer Multiple ways of learning to target a wider audience. Esp. utilize programs like BrainPop or Edpuzzle that allows the teacher to see areas a student having trouble order to re-engage learning that pushes understanding, rather than giving up. #TeacherEd#Growthmindset
Framing, or how teachers introduce new concepts and tasks to students, is the focus of Q3. Framing can steer students to a fixed or growth mindset. It helps students feel free to be a work in progress as they learn. #TeacherEd#GrowthMindset
@RutgersAltRoute A2: Teachers can let students know that sometimes learning new things can be hard and that it a normal everyday occurrence. Giving students materials in multiple formats to ensure that there are a variety of ways to learn the material &constant feedback. #TeacherEd#Growthmindset
For Q2, consider the expectations you communicate to students (verbal and nonverbal) through your classroom climate, course material & response opportunities #TeacherEd#GrowthMindset
Tip: Be specific to your content & connect with others using a # like #ArtsEd#litchat#scichat
@RutgersAltRoute With the power of "yet" I can talk more openly about the potential that even a fixed mindset students has about their inability or intimidation about a task. "Yet" offers them a olive branch of hope to more willing to try. #TeacherEd#Growthmindset
Teachers have the power to influence the mindset of students.
As you answer #TeacherEd#GrowthMindset Question 1, consider your own experience, readings, and what Carol Dweck refers to as the power of “yet” (youtu.be/hiiEeMN7vbQ?si…)
@RutgersAltRoute A1: Fixed mindset students either believe that what is being taught is too hard, not important or interesting, or has no benefit and either quick without trying or try at as little as the teacher will permit. I have had students rip up assignments #TeacherEd#Growthmindset

@RutgersAltRoute I do think that the school (if possible) could make the student to teacher ratio more accommodating so classes can be smaller or groupings could be larger but more attended to. Or have groups of like minded students together for more support.
@RutgersAltRoute Give the students the opportunity to work on their own ideas and have them present those ideas to myself or others they trust to edit, adjust, or modify the work to improve it. The goal is to expand their thinking without it being wrong or of poor quality but rather to improve it
Teachers play a role in helping students learn and practice self-awareness skills and communicate their understanding.
For Q4 think about what you’ve done or ideas you’d like to implement to help students be self-advocates, agents of their own success #TeacherEd#SpecialEd
@RutgersAltRoute I have created a presentation format where every aspect of the presentation is spelled out for the student. They have 1 months to complete the assignment and I am a co-editor therefore I can review the projects step by step with the student to manage obstacles as they happen.
For Q3 be specific content area & how you support student success, for example, your classroom environment, assignments, and assessments #TeacherEd#SpecialEd
Tip: To connect with our teachers in your subject area, use the # for your content area, i.e #arted#mathchat#scichat
@RutgersAltRoute I want to try activities that include movement and sorting activities. I am doing evolution now so I am thinking of having them time themselves and grab marbles that match and contrast with a background in a poorly lit environment. This will get them focused and moving.
Dr. Jonas Bromberg & teacher Jon Weinberger discuss classroom strategies to support students with ADHD (youtube.com/watch?v=Dd62-e…) like providing fidget tools and offering checklists.
For Question 2 (Q2) consider what's worked or ideas you want to try #TeacherEd#SpecialEd
@RutgersAltRoute I have had the opportunity to learn and use programs like BrainPop and EdPuzzle to help guide lessons that were more visual and participatory than my original plans.
For Question 1 (Q1), reflect on your experience and current practices for creating an inclusive learning environment for students with learning disabilities. #TeacherEd#SpecialEd
