@connor_naismith @AndyBurnhamGM I'm a labour member. I'll be voting for Starmer.
English

We cannot continue to deny the political reality through procedure.
We need a timetable for an orderly transition of leadership. A full and frank discussion about the future direction. @AndyBurnhamGM must be allowed to play a full part in that, if an opportunity arises.

@BethRigby Remove the whip, kick him out of the party and replace him immediately as health sec.
I'm a labour member and can't believe he's done this I'll. definitely be voting to keep PM Starmer in position.
English

🚨Streeting resignation
- "Having lost confidence in your leadership I have concluded it would be dishonourable and unprincipled" to remain in post
- "Where we need vision, we have a vacuum"
- "Where we need direction, we have drift"
- "Leaders take responsibility but too often that has meant people falling on their swords"
- "You also need to listen to your colleagues, including backbenches and the heavy handed approach to dissenting voices diminishes our politics"
- On the elections: "There is no doubt that the unpopularity of this government was a major and common factor in our defeats across England, Scotland and Wales"
- Streeting on "what comes next" for leadership - "It needs to be broad and it needs the best possible field of candidates"
- "It is now clear you will not lead the Labour party into the next general election. Labour MPs and unions want the debate about what comes next to be a battle of ideas not personalities"
"I am deeply saddened to be leaving government in this way"

Really? @HarrietHarman had previously stated that @Keir_Starmer was right to block @AndyBurnhamGM. Blocking Burnham is what led to the downfall of the PM. He should NEVER have been blocked.
English

@tnewtondunn Whatever your thoughts on Starmer, he's much better than BJ & Truss , who were sheer embarrassments to the country on multiple levels.
English

However bad Keir Starmer is as PM (and he really is bad at it), there's a strong national security argument to keep him in place until June 2. That's the date industry now expects the government to publish its much-delayed Defence Investment Plan.
Once a leadership contest is underway, the civil service will insist on suspending any decisions on it for the new PM - so the crucial job of re-building the UK's hollowed out defences will get pushed back yet again, to at least the Autumn and perhaps 2027.
That piles more risk on already significant risk. As any serving senior officer will tell you, we are not safe. We'll be even less safe by then.

@peterkyle @steph_sejourne Rejoin us whilst you're there please.
Get those red lines in the bin!

Rebuilding our relationship with Europe matters.
I headed to Brussels today to meet with @steph_sejourne as we deepen UK-EU cooperation on our industrial strategy.
A closer relationship with Europe benefits Britain - it creates jobs, strengthens trade and increases our security.

@RichardBurgon Richard, I'm a Leeds resident and labour voter but from your neighbouring constituency. If you were my MP, i wouldn't vote labour at the next election.
English

Lots of people are asking me what is going on with all the Labour leadership speculation.
So I’ll say it publicly here.
There appears to be an attempt to exploit, for their own ends, Catherine West’s understandable alarm over the catastrophic election results and the dire state the Labour Party is in.
Their aim is to bounce the party into a snap leadership contest limited to people who sat in the Cabinet and stayed silent while this Government carried out the very policies that have done such enormous damage and been a gift to Reform.
Labour cannot renew itself through a stitch-up by those responsible for the crisis we now face, including the danger of a Trump-style government.
Keir must go. But we only get one chance to get this right. So he should set a timetable to stand aside, with a new leader in place by the ends of the year. This would allow for a proper democratic leadership contest with a full range of candidates and a serious debate about how Labour changes course, the policies needed to rebuild support and how we stop Nigel Farage getting the keys to Downing Street.
English

@KevinASchofield I don't want Starmer to resign.
But those red lines are really not doing him any favours again.
I want my freedom of movement back!! After it was taken from me without my consent.
English

Keir Starmer will vow to put Britain “at the heart of Europe” while sticking to his red lines on free movement and single market membership in make or break speech tomorrow morning.
Labour MPs have warned that it must be a “game changer” to save the PM.
But one says: “Even to save his job he can't say anything interesting.”

@SamCoatesSky Tell them to p off and thank him they have a job in the first place!
English

Catherine West needs 81 names
There are 403 Labour MPs - a decent number of these privately do not want the PM to fight the next election
West says she has 10. There are 16 who publicly want him gone, though not all want West to challenge
But
I’m aware of another group of more moderate MPs who are waiting until Keir Starmer delivers his speech on Monday and then are likely to add their names ….
… if the cabinet has not “done its duty” and told him to step down first.

@Jacob_Rees_Mogg So glad we saved so much money from Brexit that ended up in people like you's pocket, Jacob. That extra kilo of foie gras isn't going to pay for itself is it?

Where would we find an extra £35 billion a year? Thank heaven we no longer belong to the EU.
Gully Foyle #UKTrade@TerraOrBust
In case you missed it - the EU Parliament has today voted to increase the already massive €1.8 Trillion EU budget for 2028-2034 by a further 10%, taking it to over TWO TRILLION EUROS. The UK as a member would've been responsible for 12% of that budget, which is 240 BILLION EUROS

@Kris_Lufc7 Yep they've been very lucky to get wins on many occasions, elland road for a start. And I've watched them quite a bit this season.
Looks like the bubble has burst. I expect them to be well in the mix for relegation next season.
English

@FootballFunnys It's definitely offside!!! Leeds have had these go against us many times. See Bamford against Palace as a prime example
