The Pacific region bears the weight of historical nuclear testing, with more than 315 nuclear tests carried out across the region between 1946 and 1996. Out of these experiences, the Pacific has emerged as a global leader in advocating for nuclear disarmament. We welcome the Kingdom of Tonga as the 100th State Party to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

Civilians must be protected and respected, no matter how often it needs to be said. Parties to conflict must not target civilians, use them as human shields, and must allow those who wish to leave conflict-affected areas to do so safely.

Staying neutral allows us to do our job. It is not indifference: it is a deliberate choice. Our mission comes from the Geneva Conventions, universal laws that preserve a degree of humanity, even in war. 163 years since our founding, neutrality remains as crucial as ever.

Release of prisoners, medical evacuations, family reunifications, assistance to populations across frontlines. Across the world, and in #Somalia (⬇️pics of 1983 and 2023), we @ICRC offer our services as a neutral intermediary, in discretion and thanks to the trust of all parties.

Killing or injuring healthcare workers, bombing hospitals, and targeting ambulances aren't just "war consequences." They are a collapse of humanity. Under international humanitarian law, patients and humanitarian workers are protected along with the hospitals they work in and the ambulances they rely on.

The consequences of sexual violence during conflict do not end when people escape the fighting. Many survivors continue to carry invisible wounds. Working with the Red Cross of Chad, we provide psychosocial support, emergency assistance and referrals to help refugees recover.

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison, and during that time, we visited him regularly. Not to negotiate. Not to judge. But to ensure humane conditions, for him and for all detainees. What struck our colleagues most? Mandela cared much more about others than himself👇🏽 #MandelaDay

Nelson Mandela once said, "a nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.” Decades later, his words carry urgent relevance, especially in armed conflict, where places of detention represent a hidden humanitarian frontline. On Mandela's Day, Ralph Wehbe, ICRC's head of the People Deprived of Liberty unit, explains why independent humanitarian access to places of detention matters, what the Mandela Rules and international humanitarian law require, and why humanity cannot stop at the prison gate👇🏽

📍Middle East | After months of military operations, civilians need a respite from, not a return to region-wide hostilities. A renewed escalation will have catastrophic consequences for tens of millions of people. We reiterate our call to the parties to take every feasible precaution to avoid or minimize civilian harm.
