The USS Nimitz (commissioned 1975) hit its planned 50-year service life by ~2025. Its nuclear reactors reached core lifespan limits, making refueling/overhauls extremely costly and time-intensive vs. building newer ships. The Navy's long-term plan was to retire it and transition to advanced Ford-class carriers like the delayed USS John F. Kennedy (now due mid-2027) for better tech, efficiency, and capabilities while keeping fleet strength at 11. The recent delay to 2027 maintains that number in the interim.

According to a report from Breaking Defense, the U.S. Navy has officially delayed the decommissioning of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) until at least March of 2027 to maintain a fleet size of 11 active carriers. Its replacement will be the USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79), which is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in mid-2027.
