Got selected for gsoc 26 i’ll be working with the @openstreetmap community on improving nominatim’s search engine… adding category support so instead of hacks like combining multiple tags or dealing with duplicate entries, devs can do things like: “vegan restaurants with wheelchair access” or cleanly query across categories like `osm.amenity.*` super excited to build this and learn a lot along the way… will do my best this summer :) summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2026/…

Official Arch Wiki is still the most trusted source.....but don’t read the Arch Wiki like a book. Usually you hit a problem or wanna understand a package/tool better.... then you open that specific article and learn on the way. For installation you basically got 2 routes....`archinstall` script its pretty straightforward. Just follow a recent YouTube video or article. One tip: always prefer latest content because Arch moves fast and old guides break pretty easily..........& Manual install if you already know what you’re doing or wanna learn deeply. Also kinda the unofficial requirement to join the Arch cult for fun lol. Parallel to that, choose your desktop environment/window manager.... KDE, GNOME, Hyprland etc. (I use Hyprland btw.).....And pls pls pls rice your setup after installation.... that’s half the fun. You’ll love it. Also found this nice article yesterday.. have a look x.com/i/status/20548… I used to have a bunch of good setup resources from when I first installed Arch, but sadly lost most of them and some are probably outdated now anyway.....If you get stuck somewhere feel free to DM me.

@idkAgasta sounds awesome. I'm almost finished all my exams for the summer, so I'm going to have a lot of time to mess around with it soon. Do you have any recommendations for where to learn all of it? Because other than following the Arch wiki I don't really know what I'm doing lol.

Well, I can congratulate @bunjavascript 🦾 The world had never before seen refactoring of such a level and speed. I'm not a Rust fan at all, but the decision to switch from a niche language with constant breaking changes to a stable and popular one was completely predictable - especially given the Zig author's instability in so many areas. It'll be interesting to see the benchmarks. It'll be interesting to see the benchmarks. p.s. Funny how everyone in the PR comments is busy burying Bun, but I'd be burying Zig.

@idkAgasta I use autosuggestion and syntax highlight. Those are the only plugins that I use. I usually don't install any other tool that is not standard because I use Mac and servers where I need the originals.

Me ...lol don’t remember ig. Been on Arch for 2+ years now & Linux maybe ~7 years overall. Did a LOT of distro hopping before settling in. Getting used to Arch itself probably took me a few weeks since I already had some Linux knowledge beforehand. Honestly the best way is just tinkering with your setup.... config max it, do stuff, break stuff. You’ll learn on the way. I’ve broken mine and my girl’s bootloader so many times, made so many dumb mistakes, but fixing those taught me a lot. And ngl that knowledge helps a ton now in system eng work too. Just have fun with it. Once you slowly build your own dream desktop env that you work on everyday.... it feels beautiful.

@idkAgasta out of curiosity, how long have you been using Arch for? And how long did it take you to get used to it?

If Linux is so powerful… why do most developers still use macOS?

Started a full planet-wide Nominatim import today. the raw OSM planet dump itself is already ~70GB compressed, ig once imported + indexed the db footprint will cross ~1.5TB+ acc to my gsoc mentors expected runtime is around ~3 days if PostgreSQL tuning, WAL settings, memory pressure, and NVMe throughput stay stable throughout the pipeline....ngl it was fun.

Found a really good article on Arch system maintenance & recovery slicker.me/arch_linux/mai… Next time I get some proper time for sys maintenance I’ll probably go through the cache recommendations section too.... that part was pretty new to me. Overall nicely written, covers the basics properly while still going deep enough.

@Apurve_Karanwal @girlscriptsoc @GoogleOSS @fosscuk Cuz GSSoC is easier to onboard into for most students and colleges love participation numbers + certificates..... Tbh most colleges don't even understand how OSS contribution works beyond “apply here get certificate”.

You forgot to wrap this entire stack in a Crossplane composition with XRDs defining CalculatorCluster and Calculation resources, managed by ArgoCD with ApplicationSets generating environments per tenant via GitOps Generators and Progressive Sync with AnalysisRuns for canary promotion using Flagger with Istio traffic mirroring and Prometheus metric thresholds. The UI should be deployed via Vercel Edge Network with ISR and partial prerendering, but the WASM binary needs to be signed with Sigstore cosign and SLSA Level 3 provenance attested via in-toto before the browser executes it. And honestly, no Dapr sidecars for the microservices? How are they supposed to communicate via pub/sub with Azure Service Bus as a pluggable component with resiliency policies and distributed tracing? This architecture won't survive the next funding round.

How to build a basic calculator in 2026: - Provision an AWS EKS Kubernetes cluster - Deploy 4 isolated microservices (Add, Sub, Mul, Div) - Route operations through a high availability API Gateway - Stream keystroke telemetry via Apache Kafka - Cache "1+1=2" in a distributed Redis instance - Offload complex division to a decentralized LLM agent - Build a stateless UI in Rust compiled to WebAssembly - Hardcode "if 2+2=4" as a fallback safety net

One of the reasons I love OSS.... Had a workflow pain while working with monorepos in Infisical, opened a feature request for multi-path auto loading. Few months later ... shipped in v0.43.82 :) Thanks @infisical team 💙 github.com/Infisical/infi…
