❤️‍🔥 HOMAGE OPEN CALL: Curatorial Brief ❤️‍🔥 Brâncuși’s key ideas and what we’re looking for ~ worth a quick read if you’re considering submitting ✨ Deadline: March 9 National Theater, Craiova, Romania Artbees Gallery / Foundation (Submission details below) Constantin Brâncuși helped redirect modern sculpture (and modernism itself) away from description, toward essence. Rather than reproducing what the eye already recognizes, he asked what form might reveal when listened to, refined, and brought to a clear, archetypal truth: a bird becomes the sensation of ascent; a portrait shifts from likeness to presence; a kiss becomes a compact architecture of union. Brâncuși said: “Simplicity is complexity resolved.” “As we carve the stone, we discover the spirit of the material… The hand thinks and follows the material’s thought.” He spoke about carving as a process of discovering what the material contains, rather than imposing a shape upon it. He was guided by the belief that form can carry meaning directly. His innovations are “simple” only in the way a poem can feel simple after the fact; arrived at through exploration, discipline, and patience. Reduction for him was a passionate investigation of proportion, rhythm, material, and the way light completes a sculpture. Polished surfaces gather the surrounding world; carved forms hold a quiet gravitas: resolved, inevitable, and strangely familiar. Across his work runs a faith in sculpture’s capacity to transmit meaning without narrative: where a curve, a pause, a vertical rise, or the faintest indication of eyes can speak to the body, and perhaps even to the spirit. This exhibition invites artists to enter that lineage of inquiry and consider how Brâncuși’s questions might live now, through contemporary materials, technologies, and cultural contexts. We're looking for submissions (still or motion, with or without sound) that enter into genuine dialogue with Brâncuși, formally or philosophically. We're excited to see approaches that consider things like reduction, archetype, spatial presence, light, and the poetic strength of essential form. "Summer breeze" Summer Breeze distills the phenomenon of weightlessness into a singular, archetypal truth: the pure sensation of ascent. Rather than illustrating the wind or telling a story of flight, the work interrogates the inherent gravitas of white marble. By subverting the immovable density of the stone and rendering it effortlessly buoyant against a vast expanse, the piece resolves the profound conceptual tension between heavy mass and delicate suspension into radical simplicity. Guided by the belief that form can carry meaning directly, the work is stripped of all narrative. It relies instead on the spatial presence, the upward trajectory, and the polished, light-gathering surface of the material to speak to the viewer. Through this reduction, Summer Breeze discovers a new, paradoxical spirit within the stone, transforming an earth-bound medium into a quiet, inevitable architecture of release.
