The only thing you need to run giant, capable LLMs is the Framework Desktop. And if you add Forgework.shop tiles to it, it ads 20 horse power.

@notcharlieslaw You are welcome to stay in an abusive relationship with Windows if you enjoy it. If you don't want to enjoy stable, friendly Linux, we aren't forcing you.

@probonopd We developers who still focus on code and laugh in the face of entryism need to stick together. For we are the future, after "their" world collapses under its own weight.

@LundukeJournal If that's their focus, quality will plummet and that'll be the end of the project. Some other project with the correct focus on building modular, widely usable software will take the lead.

It looks like the Debian Linux project will soon have a new Leader focused on having fewer "(cis)male" contributors to Debian Linux. Nominations are closed for the new Debian Project Leader... and the election period is underway. Voters have exactly 1 (one) candidate to choose from when they vote. That's right. The Debian Project is giving their members only one option. That person, Sruthi Chandran, describes herself as a "librarian turned Free Software enthusiast and Debian Developer from India". She is focused on what she calls the "skewed gender ratios within the Free Software community", saying, "how many times did we have a non-(cis)male candidate for [Debian Project Leader]?" Sruthi says that diversity should "come up for discussion in each and every aspect of the project," adding the goal is to have "more women (both cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people." Voting officially begins on April 4th. lists.debian.org/debian-devel-a…

@davepl1968 I have to assume that's a blatant troll. Linux had a usable desktop when Windows was still struggling to run in 32-bit without crashing. (Now, Linux has the best desktop, and Windows struggles to run in 64-bit without crashing.)

About 190 million Muslims support violence against apostates, they make up the vast majority of terrorism globally, and a large concentration is in NYC. This is ENTIRELY against Western civilization. It’s okay to watch this video and say, "I don’t like it."

@LundukeJournal We need an immediate test case for age verification laws, both foreign and domestic. And we need it to be dismissed with extreme prejudice towards the 100% Hitler Equivalent (tm) people who came up with these laws.

5 days until Brazil’s Age Verification law takes full effect. Brazil is threatening $9.5 Million (USD) fines for every individual violation (every user which is not forced to do age verification on an Operating System). According to the law, this applies to not only Windows and macOS… but Linux, FreeBSD, and other open source systems as well. As of today (5 days from the deadline) no open source systems are in compliance with this law in Brazil. Will Brazil enforce this law next week?

@scrowder Tyler pointed out hundreds of years ago that a republic inevitably collapses under loose fiscal policy when people are permitted to vote themselves largesse from the public treasury.

This is how to fix voting in a constitutional republic: 1. Only those in mandatory selective service get to vote 2. Pass the SAVE Act and ensure only legal citizens are voting 3. Have at least three years of gainful employment and are currently paying taxes 4. One vote per household, the standard throughout most of human history Those who only stand to gain will always vote for more gain.

It turns out GenAI code changes are causing serious incidents and outages at Amazon/AWS. Lmao. ft.com/content/7cab4e… Now engineers are no longer allowed to push GenAI code to prod without senior engineer review. How is that saving money/time? Gen AI can 2>/dev/null himself.

On May 6th, 2026, Utah’s “App Store Accountability Act” will take full effect. The following systems will be required, when used within the state of Utah, to perform age verification (in addition to the popular systems, like iOS and Android Play): - Android with F-Droid - Any Linux system (when run on a tablet or smartphone) with any package management system (including apt, Flatpak, & Snap). So, yes. Ubuntu, when installed on a tablet, would count. According to the definitions within the bill itself, this law applies to *any* operating systems which can run on mobile devices (a phone or a tablet), and which also have an “app store”. The bill defines an "App store" as a “publicly available website, software application, or electronic service that allows users to download apps from third-party developers.” In other words: Any Linux distribution (or FreeBSD, Android, etc.) which has an online software repository (of any kind). This bill puts the onus of implementing age verification on *both* the developer of the “App Store” as well as the developers of the individual pieces of software within the “App Store”. Either can be fined for failing to implement age verification within Utah. No distinction is made for free or open source software. le.utah.gov/Session/2025/b…

@LundukeJournal One of the cool things in the GPL is a clause that says if you can't satisfy both the GPL's requirements and other requirements to which you are bound, then your recourse is to not use the software at all. I feel like something similar ought to apply here.

10 days until Brazil’s draconian “All Operating Systems must have age verification” law takes full effect. To date, not one major Open Source organization (Red Hat, Canonical, SUSE, etc.) has addressed this law… which carries $9.5 Million (USD) in fines per violation (per user). And *all* major Open Source organizations have some presence in Brazil (customers, employees, or offices). Will Brazil follow through on their threats of massive fines?

@GenAI_is_real Maybe this will be a blessing. Maybe it will bring back hand-crafted efficient coding. Developers who were raised in the culture of "just link in this 500 MB library" will adapt or leave.

unpopular take: 8GB is not the problem, software bloat is. i used an 8GB mac for years and it was fine because the programs were lean. now a browser tab takes 500MB and an electron app eats 1GB just to show you a text editor. we kept throwing more RAM at the problem instead of writing efficient software. if the industry spent half the energy on optimization that it spends on adding features, 8GB would be plenty in 2026. the real question isnt why apple ships 8GB, its why we need 32GB to run a chat app @steipete

The microwave is the worst way to warm up a pizza, because it makes the crust too soft and soggy. The best way is the conventional oven, as it preserves the crunch of the crust but an air fryer can also be made to work. Agree or disagree?
