brother that's a fundamental misunderstanding of women, how they are wired and how they communicate
speaking directly is akin to confronting someone
women are biologically designed to not speak directly (confront) bc of their biological weaknesses
they are hard wired to agree w the group (absorb the dominant opinion) bc this too leads to less confrontation
expecting them to speak directly is actually a mistake on your part
beta males do the same thing, they will defer to those they find possess greater power/authority than them
why speak in hints?

it's not about what you would do, it's about potential
a man who is potentially harmless, is practically useless
almost all of this goes on behind the scenes, women don't think any of this consciously, and are largely completely unaware of it
this is also why girls are indecisive /want ment to take charge
their fleeting emotions play a large role as well, in the overall fluctuation of their direct/hint ratio
some girls will never say things outright, others are at least to some degree aware of it
many are like the OP, vaguely aware but (like you) misunderstanding why she is like that AND why men struggle w picking up on hints
we have no problem being direct (a good thing in males) BUT we don't interpret their clues and hints correctly bc we are mistakenly expecting them to just "come out and say it"
to them hints and clues are coming out and saying it, it's risk exposure w a cloak, and for many women its the most they are willing to risk

While you're expecting something unrealistic from women (direct communication) OP has unrealistic expectations of most men (that he'll understand the hints, behavior which falls outside of most men's expectations (men don't interpret hints bc they are either 1. Reveal she isn't interested or 2. They are looking for direct confirmation (female trait)
long story short men are dogs and women are cats and expecting a cat to act like a dog is insane, and vice versa
you don't hunt for deer with tactics that would help you hunt a human
you don't court a woman and expect her to act and think like a man
