@OtitoNosike Some of his ideas are indeed good even if they are repackaged. The main issue is the dominance hierarchy which is well debunked e g Epstein files.

I have never understood, and still do not understand, why people loathe Jordan Peterson. For me, he is the most compelling philosopher of the 21st century. His ideas have reshaped how the modern man, particularly in the West, sees himself. And this is not even limited to the West. Any sensible young man can recognize the value in his thinking; lessons that, if practiced as he presents them, have the power to turn one’s life around.

Top chess players are very smart, probably on par with tech bros. The ones that leave chess early usually go on to study math, get a respectable White collar job, successfully farm poker, trade bitcoin, or in Demis Hassabis' case: make major contribution to AI However, wisdom comes more from thinking about people than about things. And that's why all those cracked people on the spectrum may build impressive things or mog 100 people simultaneously in chess while blindfolded- yet still sound clueless outside of their expertise. My benchmark for true top tier intelligence: build stuff + attract people
شرق‌زده sharghzadeh@sharghzadeh

Why do people think chess players are special? Kasparov is an idiot, when asked for life wisdom, Magnus said something like “have fun.” These people are glorified athletes. Some of the Washington Square Park crackheads are chess hustlers when they’re not smoking.

@sharghzadeh the saddest thing is the game which has been used a measure for intelligence for decades doesn't even transfer its skills any other field. Terrible at math, brilliant at chess.

@reddthesock @WholesomeMeme Very untrue. Deep down even you want to work but you will need to find the kind of work which satisfies you. There's visceral pleasure in challenging the mind to create/build something which you can't get if you are in relaxed state 24/7.

@WholesomeMeme No one truly wants to work, but most of us at one point understood the things we need to live and like to do require it to exist. Food, clothes, housing, toys, all require work, or you live in a cave eating what grows on a bush.

@WholesomeMeme This is not true in general. There are other things beside the money which are interesting. Interesting problems are definitely an incentive.

This is a textbook deflection. No one is criticizing students for having an outside life or building skills beyond academia. The point is that the system now tolerates—and in some cases enables—people who barely engage in their research, yet still receive a salary, benefits (including a full-ride scholarship at institutions that can cost $70K per year), and ultimately a PhD. Being able to disengage from the core work and still receive the same credential as someone who worked very hard and accomplished a great deal is the issue.
Kyle Walker@kyle_e_walker

My first year of grad school I got a fellowship for the king’s ransom of $17,500 / year. I took a job at the Gap at the Mall of America to make ends meet. One day a professor from my program came in shopping while I was cashier. He saw me and said disapprovingly as I rang him up, “So you are doing double duty, are you?” As if I should spend every waking moment devoted to my scholarship. Graduate students often have extremely valuable skills that can translate into consulting, startups, side businesses, etc. Which in turn benefit and improve the scholarship. Frankly, encouraging grad students to have no personal or professional life outside academia sets them up for future personal and financial failure in many cases.
