Predatory envy is a hallmark of malignant narcissism. It’s the kind of envy that doesn’t just wish to possess what someone else has—it seeks to destroy the other person, or what the person has, for having it in the first place. When a narcissistic parent feels this way toward their child, it often manifests as covert sabotage, designed to inflict suffering without being detected. The parent resents the child for their youth, energy, or potential—things the narcissist either lost or never had. Instead of nurturing the child, they undermine them in secret, ensuring they struggle with poor health, exhaustion, or mental fog. This way, the child never outshines them and remains weak, dependent, or even “broken.”
