across 226 open eng roles at VC-backed AI startups in NYC, here is what we are seeing for new grad / entry-level SWE: floor: 100K - 120K top end: 125K - 175K for mid-level SWE (full stack/backend, 2-5 YoE): low end: 130K - 150K typical band: 150K - 200K top of band: 240K - 250K for senior SWE (full stack/backend, 5-8 YoE): low end: 150K - 180K typical band: 170K - 230K top of band: 240K - 300K for senior AI engineers and applied AI: typical band: 175K - 250K top of band: 250K - 350K for staff+ engineers across the board: staff backend / distributed systems: 200K - 290K staff full stack: 200K - 300K principal: 280K - 375K top end ML/research: 350K - 500K the most valuable profile rn are pre gpt engineers that are full sending shipping w/ ai if someone can actually ship features with AI tools in their workflow without breaking things, they drive a premium which is usually 20 to 50K on base because they move 2-3x faster and need less hand-holding *note that these represent salaries on job descriptions / initial salary bids - these will spike outside the range sometimes in later stages of interview* if you want to know which startups are paying this, DM me or check the onboarding link in my bio
