A Tory friend messages: I’m no fan of Starmer But he won a huge majority not long ago. I have never seen a more unecessary and damaging act of self-destruction. It’s like the Labour Party have a death wish and don’t actually want to be in power

@MatthewStadlen Press isn’t helping. Starmer, Streeting and Press equally responsible IMO. Starmer is a deeply flawed & mediocre leader: appalling at comms, but has done better than the Tories in spite of blaming his staff. Wes appears to only believe in Wes. Press believes it runs the UK. Bad.

Nothing that has happened today is remotely proportionate or reasonable behaviour this far out from a General Election scheduled for 2029. This level of internal game playing risks driving us into a General Election within months, as well as causing months of deep political instability that have real world consequences for the economy and national security. I am, to put it mildly, unimpressed.

Yesterday Downing Street were boasting Wes Streeting had bottled it and Andy Burnham didn't have a seat. This evening Wes Streeting has followed though and resigned, and Andy Burnham does indeed have a seat.

There's a lot of this about - and it's a really poor take 👇 It's perfectly normal for investors in any market to require a higher return when lending is perceived to be riskier, for whatever reason. This is just basic economics and has nothing to do with politics, or ideology.
Richard Murphy@RichardJMurphy

UK gilt yields have hit an 18-year high. That's not because the economy collapsed. It's because bond markets fear Labour might elect a slightly more left-wing leader. When financial markets seek to constrain democratic choice, that is not economic discipline. It is political power, exercised without a ballot. cnbc.com/2026/05/13/gil…

Labour were out of power for 14 years. They won a 174 seat majority under Starmer. Now, less than two years in, MPs are panicking and self-destructing. Just amateur.

Labour's strategy was beginning to work until Trump/Netanyahu screwed up the global energy system with their reckless war. We are right to stay out of it but we can't escape the consequences: place blame where it lies - on Iran, Israel and Trump...
Rachel Reeves@RachelReevesMP

Today’s strong growth figures show the Government has the right economic plan. The choices I have made as Chancellor mean our economy is in a stronger position as we deal with the costs of the war in Iran. Now is not the time to put our economic stability at risk.

@Lauren_83_ I just end up “treating myself” to make myself feel better which I do for a short time then I just feel terrible for having eaten. I’ve been on diets before but this time I’m cheating and using Munjaro, I’ve lost a stone in 3 weeks and just don’t feel like eating

@bluesbreaker2 @premnsikka The chap who gets his income from 40 london flats he inherited via a tax free gift/trust arrangement, that a management company manages on his behalf for 0 effort, pays a far smaller % of the tax on his £2million pounds per annum than a nurse pays in taxes, NI, etc on her £40k.

88% of UK millionaires proud to live in Britain. 75% willing to pay more tax to fund public assets. Yet right-wing constantly peddles project fear ... They would leave, etc. Capital gains, dividends are taxed at lower marginal rates than wages. theguardian.com/news/2026/may/…

Bond markets sold off UK gilts this week, not because of fiscal recklessness, but because they fear Labour might elect a slightly more left-wing leader. That is not rational economic analysis. It is financial power being used to constrain democratic choice, but the media covered it as though it were the former. cnbc.com/2026/05/12/uk-…

@RichardJMurphy The bond market is not a person. You know that I hope? It’s a collections of pension funds, investors, banks, unit trusts etc. They don’t collude and decide to bring down govt. They make rational decisions about risk independently.

@afneil Hey Andy Luv ... maybe read up on it bit. The bank of England owns about a third of that 3 trillion and remits the interest paid back to the treasury. The bond "vigilantes" are really not as indispensable as they think are

We saw some madness under the Tories. But the Prime Minister literally refusing to discuss with his cabinet the fact 100 of his MPs have just resigned and called for his resignation is pretty close to the top.
