When any writer from Current Affairs flips a Republican seat blue, then I will be interested to hear their takes on what MGP is doing wrong. I await that day with great anticipation.

The cover story in this month's @TheAtlantic is an 11,000 word feature on which restaurant has the best free bread. The cover story in this month's @curaffairs is a deeply-reported look at the impacts of the Cuba fuel blockade on the population. Read a serious magazine.

@rosebisquits I'm not sure I agree. The cognitive dissonance in these cases shows a lack of epistemic virtue; but I prefer that in people over an overt lack of moral virtue.

Derek Thompson is worried that "California still hasn’t actually increased housing starts in the six months" since SB79. Let's take a look at how quickly the biggest upzonings increased construction. 1/

@AndyMasley I agree with you, but it is worth mentioning that sycophancy is a type of perverse engagement driver, especially for narcissists. (I could be wrong about this, psychology isn't always obvious) Not "addicting" in the strict technical sense, but hardly neutral either.

Jon Oliver repeats the line "chatbots are designed to maximize the time you spend on them" and "single-mindedly pursue human approval at the expense of all else." A lot of the quoted stories are from over a year ago. I don't know how this is still getting said in 2026.

@WifiRumHam @radio_research I don’t think you know what she meant by the watchers. The watchers are a certain group you need to just come across on accident. They’re not necessarily human beings.

There is a rule that food stamps cannot be used for hot/prepared food that has excluded cooked rotisserie chickens which are often cheaper than raw chicken at grocery stores. It makes sense to enact a carve out. At the same time, I feel like this is going to create some kind of multibillion dollar rotisserie scam loophole somehow.
U.S. Senator John Fetterman@SenFettermanPA

Feed our busy and hardworking families with real food. Costco’s hot rotisserie — $4.99. We introduced a bipartisan bill to make our SNAP families’ lives a little more affordable + convenient in America. 🇺🇸 fetterman.senate.gov/fetterman-coll…

This is shocking: the House Rules Committee just blocked a vote on stripping the Save Our Bacon Act from the farm bill. The SOB Act, buried deep in the farm bill, would wipe out state bans on pork from crated pigs, condemning millions to a lifetime in gestation crates. We were getting very close to having the votes to pass Rep. Luna’s bipartisan amendment to strip the SOB Act from the bill on the floor of the House. Then pork industry lobbyists got to work. Behind closed doors, they got Rules Committee leadership to stop a vote entirely and protect the SOB Act from the scrutiny it can’t survive. The only option now is to kill the whole rotten farm bill. Please call your representatives at (202) 225-3121 and tell them to vote NO.

there is a whole darn lot of California in relatively short commute range from jobs way less dense than this which could be made this dense (however this would cause traffic; to keep commutes short you'd need a lot more buses/trains):

I mean, California really does have very little land left where you you can do single-family sprawl in desirable areas near jobs. Luckily, there's also very high demand for the image on the right.

@indiidentity Yeah I basically disagree but worth noting that Twitter naturally gives you a gazillion times more engagements than EA Forum and what I think many/most ppl care about is something like "meaningfulness per unit of effort" in which case Twitter and EAF look more comparable

@BenShindel I haven't read the paper, but the way I understood this was that the finding is that the small group is responsible for the accuracy not inter-market, but across all markets. It's not really surfacing people with special insight for particular topics or anything, like with WoC.

There’s a green button and a purple button. The purple button does nothing. The green button just kills you. It does nothing else. There’s literally no reason to press the green button. Which do you press?

Google to scan your entire photo library to build what it calls “Personal Intelligence.” What this means in plain English is that your images are no longer just stored, they are analyzed and integrated into a broader behavioral profile. Google openly admits the system can use actual images of you and your loved ones to generate AI content, eliminating the need for users to manually upload reference photos.

Question for people: if in 2024 you knew everything you now know about the identity and characteristics of all the people currently running the American government, would you have expected the outcome as of today to be better or worse than it is in actuality?
