@indygreg @charliermarsh Is there a canonical compiler flag like “optimize and also assume this computer is the only that will ever run this binary” so I can actually take advantage of my wonderful shiny instruction set?

Are ARM people ok. Like what's up with armv5tel vs armv6l vs armv7hf vs armv9-a

@charliermarsh glibc upgrades unlock use of new symbols, which may provide perf wins. Since glibc is provided by the system, any optimizations in existing functions will be realized automatically, even if targeting an old version.

Any good write-ups on performance improvements across glibc versions? I.e., what kind of lift can you expect when bumping your glibc version?

@benchodroff Gotta love how the page margins and font size are increased to make this look larger. Not defending the overall size, just observing the political theater.

I’m over at bsky.app/profile/indygr… now. Unsure how much more I’ll be posting here since people I follow keep leaving for bluer skies.

@MikeHommey Yeah. The feature has been there for years. But you have to bring your own code to support it. I don’t even think GitHub supports it. I imagine one could shoehorn the push certs into the repo store and have a self-verifiable repo. Like hg’s pushlog but with crypto.

@_moonstorms This is one of the original reasons for the Electoral College. See Federalist Papers No. 68.

The first RCV run out of SF seems to confirm what I was seeing tons of screenshots of: Lurie sandwiched between Breed and Farrell in ranking. Lower of Breed or Farrell is eliminated, transferring votes to Lurie, who wins. Breed and Farrell effectively cancel each other out.

I’m on a high speed train in China and the train app allows me to order takeout food from a restaurant in an upcoming station. Food will be delivered to the train and even to my seat I think. Does any other rail service in the world do this?

Good grief that looks like a lot of potentially remotely exploitable DoS bugs in today’s coordinated CPython release.

@mitsuhiko Yeah. I’m tempted to do that or just rip out the AFCI breaker for a regular one. What gets me is this worked fine for years. And the first thing I did was replace the AFCI in case it was going bad. My mobo frying itself made me think there was a reason for the AFCI trips.

@indygreg Last time I saw your tweet I googled what a AFCI is (does not exist in Europe for the most part) and given how it operates I am not surprised that there can be false positives. Maybe get one of those filters and put it in between?

After multiple years of no issues, my desktop PC starts tripping the AFCI randomly. I’ve replaced the AFCI breaker just in case. What changed? Something on the PSU? Advice online seems to be to just not use an AFCI for PCs?

Still tripped with the GPU removed.

Nope. Just tripped the AFCI again. I’m running out of components to isolate. It surely can’t be the CPU, case fans, or NVMe drives. So it must be the GPU or the enclosure somehow?

@agarwal @beyondchron I live ~1 block away. It’s gotten way worse since the sweeps began. DPW (I think) and SFPD jointly cleared people out Sunday (never saw this before). But the side streets were occupied again last night. City appears to be playing whacamole.

@beyondchron Someone just told me that Market and Van Ness has like 30 dealers at night. I was shocked! I had no idea drug activity has moved so close to Hayes Valley.

I just walked along Market from Franklin to 10th St. The area is really struggling, even compared to just a few months ago. Most businesses have closed, condo developments have paused construction, there's little foot traffic. Inside the (former) Twitter building, all the restaurants are shuttered. The Market (grocery store) is still open but most food vendors are gone and most shelves are empty. I hope new companies take over the spaces vacated by Twitter, Uber, Block, etc and residential construction gets going again, but it's going to take many years for this area to turn around. 😢
