A trans woman isn’t “a man in a dress.” The difference is gender identity, a stable, long-term psychological trait recognized in medicine. Clothes or appearance don’t define gender, and transition isn’t about “proving” anything it’s treatment for dysphoria that improves well-being.

Please explain what differentiates a trans woman from 'a man in a dress and make up', because I've been playing close attention to trans activists for a decade now and the most common explanation I've been given is 'he says he's a woman, so play along or you're evil.' Runner up explanations: A man is a trans woman if he's put in a lot of effort into looking like a woman. However, a man who's made no such effort is just as valid a trans woman as one who does. Trans women with beards and penises are completely valid. The existence of men and women with differences of sexual development ('intersex' people) prove that a completely different group of people who don't have such disorders are trans if they say they are. The true mark of who's a man or a woman isn't biological sex, but the untestable gender identity that resides in all human beings, whether or not they believe in it. At the same time, trans people must be given easy, automatic access to cross-sex hormones and surgeries so they can alter themselves to more closely resemble the opposite biological sex.

Yes and no. In large swaths of the country, zoning laws prohibit people from building housing with multiple units. This is called single family zoning and its proponents claim that these laws prevent overcrowding and keep the neighborhood surburban in character. However, the downside of these laws are that many neighborhoods have a shortage of housing because the cost of property is artificially kept high due to the limited supply. They don’t respect property rights because they make it illegal for people to build mother-in-law cottages or duplexes. By removing single family zoning laws, the market will determine the cost and give a nice incentive to build more units. It will encourage multigenerational families. It’s a win win for everyone. Everyone except landlords and property speculators.

Today, I signed a group of bills that help address our state's housing shortage. As I’ve traveled around the state, the shortage of affordable housing was the number one issue I heard about from Washingtonians. The work is not done, but it's a big step.
