Nothing is certain except death and regulation @EnlliMcA's piece today touches on both. 55 countries, 55 regulators, 4–7 year delays on life-saving drugs. How do you solve a regulatory commons? What did the East African pilot get right? Can it scale? tinyurl.com/48zerf76

@eni_iljazi it is a bargaining game, and both good and bad arguments are plays in the game! it's all part of the game

It’s astounding how some economists approach the grad student union debates every time they come up. It’s a bargaining game. How is it relevant if one can survive on a grad stipend or not? We’re not asking if quants can afford food on $500K, and those nerds love their jobs too.

I’m looking for a part-time cofounder, which sounds horribly startup coded, but I mean it more as finding a work soulmate to build a venture with. Someone interested in AI, culture, art, education, and development econ, reimagining how humans learn, think, and build community.

@alz_zyd_ if anybody in the history of the intellectual world crosses the threshold of competence it is Newton, yet he seems to have spent most of his time on mostly nonsense alchemy

Competence, and competence alone, is the threshold which separates superstition from science. It has nothing to do with methods, worldviews, principles. Competence alone separates alchemy and chemistry; astrology and astronomy; traditional and modern medicine
Terminus Est@TerminusEst24

When you say macro-development is not a science, what exactly do you mean? Are you saying it doesn’t generate testable hypotheses? That it can’t be used for prediction? That it doesn’t have a consistent approach to observing and classifying data? Or are you saying it’s a hard area to crack using the methods/approaches above, so while still a science, it hasn’t been successful to date?

@MTabarrok @sebkrier It's not for nothing, the world is a better place if everyone survives because of blue than if everyone survives because of red, because we would all love and trust each other more :) actual tradeoff is not just survival vs saving others, it that conditional the world we get

If everyone pressed in sequence, then it's morally right to press blue if there are already lots of people in there. But the first person to press blue is the worst person on earth. Not only do they endanger all the people who come after to save them, but they also debase and murder themselves for nothing which is arguably worse since self care is a pre-requisite to altruism. Pressing blue in the private information game is some mix of these. Blue only becomes morally right if we assume that someone has already committed the moral crime of being the first blue. But if we're talking about morality than that's what we should talk about. It's immoral to debase yourself such that you would deviate from the dominant strategy for nothing.

@alz_zyd_ BotE marginal fuel costs are way smaller than the actual charges even on airlines that charge relatively less, so I don't think it's exactly about that

It's actually a good sign if an airline charges you a lot for checked bags. Suitcases are heavy, so it costs the airline extra fuel to fly them. If there isn't a high upcharge for checked bags, it's already baked into the ticket price

for the first time in the past few months, non-human beings have made consumption decisions ie there is spending that counts towards GDP, that is neither investment nor human consumption nor government expenditure
