I got promoted from Band 3 to Band 7 within the space of this 5years… not knowing anyone! If we want to build learning systems for improvement, we must encourage our teams to be curious. A culture of curiosity leads to psychological safety, experimentation & problem solving. Yet a recent large study found most leaders regard curious people as "insubordinate" & like them less than people who don't question things. However, curious people who are politically skilled are liked & supported by their leaders. Lessons for leaders AND change agents here. For two reasons, leaders are often reluctant to be honest about how f***ed up their orgs actually are. First, it can seem like a self-indictment (it must be the leader's fault); and second, it's another stick for the leader's back (who, if not the leader, is going to fix it?).
