Contrary to online propaganda by sceptics, there is substantial development progress in Northern Kenya, with leaders working steadily to improve service delivery for the people.
The construction and modernization of the Wajir County Referral Hospital is a transformative county-led infrastructural project, undertaken in collaboration between the National and County governments in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The historic facility was constructed in 9944 by Italian prisoners of World War II and the current modernization is effectively expanding and building over this 80-year-old colonial-era foundation.
Spearheaded by Wajir Governor Hon. Ahmed Abdullahi, the expansion seeks to upgrade the facility into a Level 5 specialized medical hub, reducing costly referrals to Garissa and Nairobi.
The project features a multi-storey Accident and Emergency (A&E) wing designed for comprehensive care. The ground floor hosts outpatient and emergency services, including triage, consultation rooms, a pharmacy, ECG unit and rapid-response laboratories.
The first floor provides a 48-bed inpatient ward, equally divided for male and female patients, alongside four private amenity rooms.
The second floor houses a 12-bed ICU, a 12-bed HDU and three modern operating theatres equipped with advanced systems, including laminar flow technology not commonly available in public facilities.
The rooftop is fitted with an industrial-grade purification plant capable of producing 2,000 litres of medical-grade water per hour.
The facility also integrates modern A&E systems within a structure whose earlier ward sections were historically developed, with the outpatient department already operational and key equipment in place.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to support such strategic public infrastructure, ensuring a secure environment for delivery, safeguarding investments and enabling uninterrupted expansion of essential services for citizens. Did you know that communities including the Borana and Somali have valid claims regarding the origin of the name “Wajir,” which means “togetherness” or “convergence”?
Indigenous communities established Wajir as a key caravan route owing to its complex water wells and linking Moyale in Marsabit and southern Ethiopia to Kismayu in Somalia.
In 1912, the Imperial British East Africa Company made Wajir an administrative centre otherwise known as a “Boma”.
After Kenya’s 🇰🇪 independence in 1963, Wajir became part of the North Eastern Province and with the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya in 2010, Wajir was officially recognized as a distinct County.
This year, Wajir proudly hosts the National Madaraka Day Celebrations, the first time such celebrations are being held in the North Eastern Region and since Wajir’s establishment.

The Cherangany Hills Ecosystem Restoration for Livelihood Improvement, Sustainability and Harmony (CHERISH) initiative is anchored on 5 components: ecosystem restoration and climate resilience, community empowerment, education and knowledge management, promoting sports and talent development and resource mobilisation.
The four counties that make up the Cherangany Hills ecosystem have historically produced world-beating athletics stars. As we gear up for the official launch of the CHERISH programme, we saw it fit to have a race to empower our local athletes, promote talent, foster peace and cohesion, and involve the community in environmental conservation.
To mark the occasion, we planted trees on the edge of Embobut Forest, which is one of the 22 gazetted forests in the Cherangany Hills ecosystem.
Congratulations to Catherine Relin, Vivian Cheruiyot, and Sharon Cherotich for emerging first, second and third respectively in the inaugural Cherangany Hills Peace and Conservation Peace 10KM women's race.
In the men's 10KM, Mathew Kimeli emerged winner with Caleb Majasi and Rodgers Plimo coming in second and third place. Hongera kwao.
The other results were as follows:
Women's 5KM race
1. Philaries Chepkorir
2. Dorcas Yego
3. Joan Korir
Men's 5KM race

Presided over by H.E. President @WilliamsRuto and graced by Deputy President Prof. @_KithureKindiki, in the company of other leaders, we joined residents at Mama Ngina Drive in Mombasa County to witness the issuance of title deeds, an enduring affirmation of ownership, dignity and belonging.
Secure land tenure underpins stability. Formalizing ownership resolves longstanding uncertainties, strengthens public order, reduces disputes and builds community confidence, placing development on a firm, predictable footing where citizens can invest, thrive and live without fear over what is rightfully theirs.

PS, Dr. Belio Kipsang delivered the keynote address during the sensitization forum for National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) from the eight sub-counties of Busia County. The session, held at Busia Breeze Hotel, focused on the revised National Registration guidelines and sought to equip NGAOs with the knowledge and tools to enhance efficiency in service delivery and ensure all eligible Kenyans can access registration services.
Dr. Kipsang emphasized the vital role of NGAOs in public sensitization, civic responsibility, and documentation of citizens. He highlighted reforms in border counties and Northern Kenya that have streamlined the issuance of identity documents, easing challenges that previously forced residents of border communities and individuals with cross-border family ties to undergo lengthy bureaucratic processes. These barriers had denied many youth and adults opportunities to open bank accounts, secure employment, enrol in higher learning institutions, and access essential services such as those offered by the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The PS also called for urgent measures to clear the backlog of uncollected IDs in Busia County, currently standing at 4,487—comprising 1,610 NPR IDs and 2,877 others. NGAOs welcomed the initiative, noting its potential to strengthen public awareness and improve service delivery within communities.
Also present were Busia County Commissioner Stephen Orinde and Heads of Directorates from the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services.

The State Department for Correctional Services plans to transition to clean cooking by the end of next financial year in a move aimed at moving away from unsustainably harvested and inefficiently burned biomass.
According to Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco, the plan, which will be implemented through a Rapid Results Initiative strategy, will allow for the adoption of clean cooking solutions across all correctional facilities in the country for both the Kenya Prisons Service and Probation and Aftercare Service.
The PS said the transition has been motivated by a need to cut energy costs, which continue to constitute a significant budgetary burden, with substantial funds spent annually on firewood for cooking, as well as align with the broader government agenda of adopting cleaner cooking solutions to mitigate the negative impacts associated with the use of traditional fuels.
Besides reducing the cost associated with firewood, the PS said a complete shift to cleaner, non-solid fuels will, in turn, improve indoor air quality, thereby improving health outcomes for those living within correctional settings.
A technical team is already developing a workplan to actualize the aspirations, with a committee comprising officers from the department and experts drawn from relevant government ministries and departments set to be constituted to implement the plan.
The Lang’ata Women’s Maximum Prison has already successfully transitioned to modern LPG gas cookers in its kitchen in a move that has enhanced safety and reduced smoke exposure, besides reducing operational costs.
Embu Women Prison has also achieved a 100% transition from firewood to clean biogas for cooking through the conversion of organic and human waste into renewable energy.

Since independence, Wajir has never had a stadium, relying instead on open, undeveloped grounds such as Wajir Baraza Park for community events and public gatherings. Sixty-two years later, under the leadership of H.E. President @WilliamsRuto, the town is witnessing a transformative shift, demonstrated in the rapid progress of the Wajir Stadium, now 84% complete.
Works are being fast-tracked ahead of the June 1st Madaraka Day celebrations, positioning the facility as both a national event venue and a long-term asset for sports development in the region.
Managed by the Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces (@kdfinfo), the ultra-modern complex is on course for timely completion, allowing adequate time for national rehearsals.
The 10,000-seater stadium features a full-sized football pitch designed for artificial turf installation, a standard eight-lane running track, modern changing rooms, VIP lounges, spectator amenities and terrace seating with seat installation works underway, alongside ample parking and a borehole that ensures a reliable water supply for overall operations.
This investment is set to unlock significant benefits for Wajir and the wider North Eastern Region, providing a platform for local talent to thrive, stimulating small businesses and fostering social cohesion through sports and community events.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is leading a multi-agency team in delivering the project, ensuring seamless coordination and high standards. The Department will also continue to safeguard the facility beyond the celebrations, reinforcing security and preserving it as a safe, vibrant public space for years to come. The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will significantly enhance security and public order in the city and its surroundings.
The Unit will strengthen response to emerging security challenges, improve inter-agency collaboration, and promote cooperation between the police and the public.
This morning, I received a progress report from the technical committee working on establishing the Unit.
I am gratified that the team is learning from some of the best metropolitan police units in the world in coming up with the administrative structure, service standing orders and standard operating procedures.
Present were National Government Coordination PS Ahmed Abdisalan, Inspector General Douglas Kanja, and representatives from the Nairobi County Government, among other senior Government officials.

National celebrations have so far been taken to 5 different regions across Kenya 🇰🇪, ensuring that every part of the country and all Kenyans share in moments of national unity and development.
From Nairobi to Bungoma in Western, to Kericho in the Rift Valley, Homa Bay in Nyanza, and Embu and Kitui in Eastern, the celebrations have reflected our nation’s diversity and inclusivity.
This year, it is the North’s turn, with Wajir County @WajirKE set to host the Madaraka Day celebrations.

Having a more professional Police Service is something we all aspire to as a country.
The Ministry is accelerating plans to introduce body worn cameras for selected Police units to enhance transparency and accountability.
We are also expanding pathways into policing. A KCSE certificate will no longer be the only route for eligible candidates. The recruitment of graduate cadet officers with specialised expertise is another reform we are pursuing to strengthen professionalism and leadership within the Service.
English

The National Police Service is an instrument of our democracy.
Without that structure, the rights we are quick to claim become meaningless.
A police station burnt. A vehicle torched. A court building attacked.
This hostility toward institutions of law enforcement and growing normalization of destructive protest should trouble our collective conscience.
