Grateful that our campaign was included in this special edition! One of the questions our campaign puts forward is "Why not just ban killing animals?" Check out this issue for our perspective and if you're curious to learn more about our campaign, go to yesonip28.org
Current Affairs@curaffairs

Issue 55 is here! It's a very special edition of Current Affairs, with every article devoted to animal welfare. We’ve recruited leading scholars and activists to lend their voices in this issue, but we’ve done it with the signature Current Affairs satirical and artistic flair.

@PCRM @DrNealBarnard While petitioning for our ballot initiative (which proposes to ban animal testing, as well as slaughtering, hunting, and artificially inseminating animals) we've gotten a number of people mentioning their desire to shut down ONPRC.

Is it time to close the Oregon National Primate Research Center? In a compelling op-ed for The Oregonian, @DrNealBarnard calls for an end to outdated and inhumane animal experiments—and a reinvestment in modern, human-relevant science and patient care. Could rats soon have better access to birth control than women? Well, let's hope everyone can have access! NY is testing a pilot program that is more humane for everyone and for the sake of all animals, we hope this becomes the norm and all rodenticides and traps are banned. #HumaneSolutions #AnimalRights #BirthControl

26 states have citizen-initiated ballots/referenda. If citizens propose a law and collect enough signatures, their idea can be placed on next election's ballot for everyone to consider. Your state isn't listed? No worries! Cities & counties have ballot box initiatives too. 🧵1/3

What if #AnimalRights activists went all out: proposed a ban on killing #animals? That's David Michelson's goal via Oregon's IP28🗳️ Join David-- and 5 other ballot-initiative Campaign Leaders-- on Dec. 5th, as he describes the idealism driving him and his plans to make it happen.

I have seen animals in the moments before slaughter - shuddering as they await the blade. And that will NEVER be ok. Even one violent death is one too many. We should say this. Because it's in our hearts. Because it's true. And because heartfelt truths can change everything.

@waynehhsiung We believe our 2026 ballot initiative in Oregon—to ban slaughter, hunting, experimentation, and breeding of animals statewide—can help make that 5th prediction come to fruition.

My first two election day predictions were correct: Trump won, and pro-animal ballot initiatives lost. I believe the others will come true too. Most importantly, this will be the last Pres election in history where no one talks about animal rights. blog.simpleheart.org/p/five-pre-ele…

IP28 would remove the exemptions among Oregon's animal cruelty laws, making it so anything we can't do to our companions (such as slaughtering, experimenting, hunting, and inseminating them) would also be banned for all animals statewide. Visit yesonip28.org for more.

"By pushing for laws that exempt farms, the Humane Society helped to install a legal regime that normalizes and even exhorts practices that it considers intolerable when done to pets. Such laws...harden the cruel boundary between companion animals and livestock ever more."

"For an issue like animal rights, which is almost completely ignored by politicians, mainstream media, and even other social justice movements, ballot measures are a powerful tactic to put the issue on the table."

We might not post as often, but we've been hard at work collecting signatures! After only three weeks into our new petitioning cycle, we collected over 10,000 signatures. With 23 months remaining, we're confident 2026 will be the year animal liberation is on the ballot in Oregon.

We are excited to announce that we have launched a new initiative for 2026 and have received a certified ballot title from the Secretary of State. IP28 has the same aim as IP3 and IP13, to ban the killing of animals statewide. Learn more at yesonip28.org/about

VICTORY! The initiative to ban concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) has qualified for the ballot in Sonoma County with over 25,000 valid signatures. County residents will be able to vote to protect animals, the planet, and their communities from the harms of factory farming. Sonoma County would be the first in the nation to pass this type of legislation and it could have groundbreaking implications for animals everywhere. Huge thank you to all of the volunteers who collected signatures to get this on the ballot, and to the thousands of Sonoma County voters who signed.
