Today, I received reports that the judiciary (Mizan) announced the executions of Babak Alipour and Pouya Ghobadi (the link to their communication is below). Given the ongoing internet shutdown, it remains unclear who else has been or is being executed. What is clear is that executions are being used as a means of suppressing political dissent amid war.

Since the war began, at least six executions have been recorded under an internet blackout that has now lasted 31 consecutive days. Three men were hanged in connection with the nationwide protests that started on 28 December 2025, following proceedings reportedly marred by serious due process concerns. Another individual was also executed on charges of espionage linked to Israel. Today, two more were executed for baghi (armed rebellion against the foundations of the Islamic Republic). On those last two, together with UN experts, I had sent an urgent communication to the Iranian authorities in September 2025 to halt the execution Akbar (Shahrokh) Daneshvarkar and Seyyed Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi. It is very rare for Saudi to manage political capital on the streets like this. What's interesting here is the lack of anti-UAE sentiment in Taiz. (At least I didn't see it here) IRGC's recent escalations seem to have forced a disciplined script on the anti-Houthi bloc, but what would be interesting to see is if this survives the current regional stress test.
