We believe this is the new way of discovering things: set a scope and spend compute to explore the search space. We also believe this could be an interesting, inspectable open-ended benchmark of model quality in autonomous exploration.

This is a good example of a subtle but important aspect of Y Combinator. There are certain tunnels in society through which talented outsiders can become insiders much more rapidly than everywhere else, and YC is one of them.

This whole debate about where you need to be to build a startup is silly. Can't we just agree that you can create a great company from anywhere as long as you're determined, have a bit of luck, and are in the bay area?

Historically, letting technology eliminate their jobs has been a sacrifice people have made for their kids' sakes. Not intentionally, for the most part, but their kids ended up with the new jobs created as a result. No one weaves now, and that's fine.

i loved my time at openai. it was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. most of all i loved working with such talented people. will have more to say about what’s next later. 🫡

We ask ourselves: Would I invest in these founding teams for life? Getting to a long-term commitment after a couple of 30-minute meetings and a bunch of Q&A over emails is extremely hard, but it's possible.

These YC pre-demo day weeks have been intense, and I tried to re-learn how investing should work at the very early stages. For us, it's investing in founders. Products change, companies evolve, and initial good ideas may become dumb after a while.
