I learn so much from novels. Types of knots, types of boats, types of whales, parts of whales, methods for processing whales, what can be made from whale, shape of whale, what the whale did, the whale's likely motivation, color of said whale, metaphysical ramifications of said co

An important addition to Observation Hill: our team has installed a new plaque near the historic Memorial Cross that stands between McMurdo Station and Scott Base.
Erected on the summit in January 1913, the Memorial Cross stands as a testament to Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his companions who lost their lives returning from the South Pole in 1912. Bearing Tennyson's immortal words 'To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield,' this jarrah timber cross has watched over McMurdo Sound for over a century, facing out towards the "Barrier" – the Ross Ice Shelf, on which Scott's party had died.
Protected as Historic Site and Monument No. 20 under the Antarctic Treaty, the cross continues to be cared for by Antarctic Heritage Trust in partnership with Antarctica New Zealand and the United States Antarctic Program.
If you'd like to help keep our Conservation teams working on the Ice, you can make a donation at nzaht.org/donate.

Talk about precision archaeology! 🔎⛏
Trust Archaeologist Emma St Pierre carefully excavates fragile paper fragments frozen into the scoria near Scott’s ‘Terra Nova’ hut at Cape Evans. 🏛️❄️
This kind of delicate work requires steady hands and extreme patience - especially when dealing with materials that have been trapped in Antarctic conditions for over a century. Every fragment could help tell the story of life at Cape Evans for Scott and his men.
You can support our Conservation teams working in Antarctica by making a donation through our website at nzaht.org/donate.
