NGC 4698

These galaxies are locked in. The pair, known as ESO 550-2, is caught in a gravitational dance. This interaction's already deformed one arm of the larger galaxy on the left, and star formation continues both in that arm and in a ring structure around the galaxy's core. ESO 550-2 is surrounded by the glow of faintly shining stars and interstellar matter that's been smeared through space by the gravitational effects of the collision, along with the pull of a third nearby galaxy out-of-frame.
