Just as I thought — the AfD is gaining popularity again in Germany. The record-breaking result has been confirmed: the party won 20% of the vote in the Rhineland-Palatinate state election, and up to 48.4% in some districts. The AfD, led by Alice Weidel, is a classic Kremlin operation of influence within NATO and the EU. Weidel advocates for closer ties with Russia, opposes arms transfers to Ukraine, opposes sanctions, and wants Ukraine to simply surrender. The chairman of the Bundestag Defence Committee had previously warned that right-wing extremists were “purposefully and systematically” requesting confidential information. Minister of the Interior of the Free State of Thuringia Georg Maier stated bluntly: Weidel and her party are carrying out “tasks set by the Kremlin.” Der Spiegel reported that the AfD is abusing parliamentary inquiries to gather intelligence on the country’s critical infrastructure. We should also take a closer look at Weidel herself. She is the most anti-right-wing figure Russia has put in charge of an ultra-right-wing party. An openly lesbian woman, she lives with a migrant in Switzerland, and her children study abroad. At the same time, her party opposes migrants, advocates for the traditional family, and advocates for a “Germany for Germans” stance. How this all fits together in voters’ minds is unclear. Perhaps far-right voters are swayed by their Nazi grandfather who served in the SS? Who knows.
